On July 4th, 1795, the first American firearm was fired in Wallington Township. The weapon was a .22-caliber rifle belonging to Captain John Smith of the Third Regiment of Artillery. The rifle discharged a single shot and caused some damage to a nearby building. It is believed that this rifle was the first firearm used in America. The town of Wallington began growing around this time and many people moved there for the chance to own land or purchase shotguns from Captain Smith. On November 14, 1868, the Township of Wallington became part of Middlesex County and its lone resident was Samuel Mifflin. At this time, firearms were not allowed in Middlesex County so Samuel had to find another way to enjoy his gun rights while living within the constraints of county law. He fashioned himself a hat (probably using straw) and wore it as an article of clothing over his head when he went about his business outside of town limits. In 1897, two pistols were added to the New Jersey State Constitution which meant that anyone could own one without having to obtain a license or paying fees. This made Firearms Licensing Act much more difficult for individuals like Samuel Mifflin who continued to make hats with straws even though they were no longer allowed by state law

Wallington is a small town located in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Wallington was founded in 1799 by Captain John Wallington and his family. The village of Wallington became a borough in 1847 and then an incorporated town in 1892. The borough was merged into the township in 1972. As of the 2010 census, the population of Township was 14,959. The earliest known mention of Wallington is from 1799 when Captain John Wallington settled there with his family. In 1800 he patented 4 acres (1 km²) on the east side of what is now Market Street for £100 payable within 10 years or face forfeiture to state government. In 1807-08 Lieut Col James Paulding commanded British forces during the War of1807 and while at Fort Monmouth he met Capt John Wallington who had come overland from Sir William Howe’s army to seek safety and opportunity among these new settlers on Middle Branch Creek river near where present day Livingston Avenue runs south (the creek mouth today lies about 3 miles south). After Paulding left Monmouth they went together to purchase land along this creek which would become part of present day Wallington Township when it was surveyed in 1847 by Colonel Haddon Halliday Captain John's great grandson also named JohnWallington bought property adjacent to present day Rice Road just east of modern Route 382 between 1945-46 for $675 which included 2 lots extending northeasterly from said road northwesterly for about 2/3 mile with an intervening piece or woods lying between them on estate called Park Place bounded by that road & Indian Field Road including 350 acre piece situated northeast corner thereof bounded by said road & River street upstream from thenceformerly used as meadow run down Trinity stream thenceto fields adjoining river limits leased out by Mr Wm Collier late de facto proprietor of said meadow [sic] contiguous thereto once valued at $800 per year before conversion into lot lots]. Captain John's son died young without children so eldest son George took over management but sold some properties including 500 acres (20 km²) along current boundary line between Easton Borough and Easton Township to raise money for his father's large payment coming due next year but never paid off bonds issue because prices increased rapidly on frontier markets; 400 acres (16 km²) along Boundary Line Between Easton Borough And Easton Township On His Father's Estate From Which He Purchased 1000 Acres For $3000 In 1865 When Prices Were At A Little More Than $2000 Per Acre But By 1870 They Were At Over $4000 Per Acre So He Sold All That Property Back To General Lewis Cass This Was Recorded In History Book Of deeds book 9 page 511 under Date Sept 25th 1870.- Today There Is Only 100acre Lot Left Off Map

Wallington Township was organized on March 10, 1838, from parts of Middlesex and Union Counties. The township was named for Commodore John A. Wallington, a United States Navy officer who had served in the Mediterranean during the Napoleonic Wars. At its peak in the late 1800s, Wallington had a population of around 1,500 people. In 1916, Wallington became one of five municipalities to fusion with Burlington Township to form Burlington County. Today, Wallington is a small town with a population of around 105 people. It is located just north of Turnpike East off Interstate 95 and has a small shopping mall and several churches including First Baptist Church and Stedman Methodist Episcopal church. The township also has a number of historic buildings such as the old post office building which still remains standing today and was built in 1902. Additionally, there are several nature reserve areas located within the township which offer many activities for residents including hiking, fishing, camping and bird watching.
Wallington was founded by Nicholas Wallington in 1799. It became a borough in 1834 and a city in 1912.
