Wallington was founded as a hamlet on the estate of Colonel John Wallingford in 1785 by General George Washington and his aide, Major Anthony Wayne. Wallington grew rapidly due to its natural resources and its location on the Susquehanna River between Camden and Trenton. In 1825, Wallington became an incorporated town under the name of "Westminster". The first postmaster general of the United States was from Wallington. In 1856, it became one of four towns in Mercer County to be granted city status; this status was revoked in 1898 when Mercer county became fully self-governing. On July 1, 1860, Westminster merged with neighboring East Newark to form what would become known as "Wallington Heights". During World War II, much effort went into manufacturing munitions here including aircraft parts and Bakelite products used throughout Europe and America during that war. After the war ended there were layoffs but over time more jobs opened up for people who had been displaced during wartime production such as electricians and plumbers etcetera. Today many businesses are still based here such as H&M which has their headquarters here since 1978 The median income for a household in 2009 was $60,974 (the median income for a family was $81,594). Males had a median income of $41,872 versus $27,482 for females. The per capita income for 2009 was $21,658 compared to $15,-million for New Jersey statewide total; however poverty rates are significantly higher than New Jersey's overall rate: 38%. About two thirds of residents live below poverty line while one third lives above poverty line according to Census 2000 data As boroughs within Mercer County were chartered independently until 1898 when they all came together under common management as "Wallington Heights", sowallington generally falls within both these categories even though its boundaries change frequently - most notably due to changes made to Route 32 following 9/11 which moved part ofwallingford eastward along Rte 322 & westward along Rte 97

Wallington was a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark metropolitan area. The first settler in Wallington was John Fenton who arrived in 1740. In 1812, Andrew Woodruff and his family founded the village of White Plains on the east side of Wallington Creek. The name changed to Wallington in 1839 when it became part of Hunterdon County. In 1851, there were only two stores and 20 residents in Wallington when it became a borough. On July 3 of that year, it merged with nearby Rahway to form Rahway–Wallington Borough which had a population of 4,500 people as of 2010. The borough built its first public building in 1865: the Bank House (now called theRahway-Wallington Library). This bank building served as the borough's first courthouse from 1865 to 1870 and also housed its first library until 1910 when it moved to what is today known as central square across from the Rahway High School complex (the current structure was completed in 1955). On December 5, 1922, Wallington lost its charter due to low tax collections; however, it re-emerged as an official municipality on January 1st of 1923. On May 2nd 1907 – less than two years after incorporation – Wallington's clock began striking regular hours outside City Hall (now known as Central Square) for all municipal purposes including elections; this unique feature continues to this day!
Wallington was once a small farming community in the then Middlesex County, New Jersey. It is now an unincorporated community located within Union Township, Morris County. The first Europeans to arrive in Wallington were Dutch settlers from Holland who built a cabin on the lands that are now Wallington Township in 1682. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and it was not until 1712 that the British took over New Netherland and incorporated it into their new empire. The first settler in Wallington was John Beale who arrived in 1720. He farmed land around what is now the intersection of Route 37 and Routes 901 and 902. In 1724, Benjamin Waterman settled along what is now Route 302 near where he would go on to own land that would become known as Waterman's Mill Pond. In 1729, Nicholas Cohan settled at what is now corner of Routes 901 and 302 near where he would later build his house still standing today. In 1814, when Union Township was formed from parts of Middlesex County, Wallington became an addition to the township. It remained an unincorporated community until 1912 when it became part of Union City through annexation by that city.
