Wallington is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,711 at the 2010 census. Wallington is named after Revolutionary War General George Washington's home and plantation in Virginia. The name of the town comes from a gully near by where Washingtons farm once stood. The first inhabitants of what is now Wallington were Native Americans who lived on the land that now includes the town. In 1732, Colonel Nicholas Pope purchased some of this land from them for £200 sterling. At that time,Wallington was known as "Pope's Ford". Bishop John Woolridge founded a mission station here in 1734 and called it "Huguenot Hall". The settlement came to be known as "Wallington" after General Washington's estate in Fairfax County, Virginia which he visited during his military campaign against British forces there in 1755-56. In 1814, when Union County was formed from part of Middlesex County, Wallington became part of Union Township. It remained an unincorporated township until 1946 when it became a part of Village Of East Brunswick Township. As Village Of East Brunswick Township it had full powers to tax residents and make laws within its boundaries; however its borders remain unchanged today as they are defined by Township boundaries which also include parts of Highland Park and South Brunswick Township (to the east). On July 1st, 1960, Wallington incorporated as a borough under the terms set forth in Borough Law No 2-1960 which amended Borough Law No 1-1948 which created Borough Of East Brunswick teeming with new citizens eager to break away from their more established counterparts across townships inUnionCountyand beyond due to various reasons including: high taxes rates (the average homeowner paid about $156 per year), lack of government services available on either side of Route 22 north/south running through our community(including primary education for childreninder 16 years old or younger being unavailable outside our borders), increasing crime rate(particularly auto theft) among other complaints levied at our less affluent fellow taxpayers; however despite these issues along with many others throughout our borough charter revision process culminating on Monday night November 5th 2010 we ultimately approved an amendment that would rename our borough -Wallington NJ - following in line with recent changes brought about by legislation affecting all New Jersey municipalities seeking reformation following passage without objection by both chambers of the State Legislature prior to its effective date January 1st 2011 thereby achieving status quo ante upon passage becoming law notwithstanding any protestations made by Mayor Anthony Jaffa & Councilmembers Michael Cogan et al., regarding proposed name change .....

The original settlement consisted of only a few homes and some land. wallington nicknames include "The Promised Land" because it was supposed to be the site of a promised land grant from King George III. Today, Wallington is an important stop on Route 9 northbound and eastbound between Newark and Elizabethtown Township along the Susquehanna River. The community has been known for its annual summertime fair which features various food booths, arts and crafts exhibitors, live music and games for children. The name "Wallington" derived from two early residents - John Wallingford, who lived on Court Street west of the present day intersection of Routes 9A and 9B/Upper Mill Road/Narrow Gauge Railroad Line No. 2 (now CR 9A), as well as James Fenton who purchased lot opposite him on lower Mill Road west of present day Montgomery Drive/Newark-Elizabethtown Township line (now CR 9E). According to one story, John's brother named him after his namesake - another JohnWallingford who settled near what is now West Orange in Essex County about 1740-1745., although other sources claim that this JohnWallingford may have been unrelated to either John or JamesFenton and simply picked up the name from their neighbors.* According to tradition, when General Washington arrived at Trenton during his brief visit in 1776 he found many people living around Princeton under false pretenses – including several families from Wallington – so he ordered them all delivered back home immediately upon his departure. Among those taken into custody were five Wallingtonians: Captains Samuel Morison and Gideon Heathcote*, Lt.-Governor Nicholas Easton*, Captain Johann Friedrich Christoph von Graf Wessels* (*and two other men). Colonel Dunmore* took over command at Princeton but soon discovered that most of these refugees had no idea how to behave while under military occupation.* so he had them confined to quarters until they could learn *the ways of American independence*. Eventually all five captains were pardoned with special conditions included not returning home again until they had learned more about American ways.* Governor Dunmore also issued orders forbidding any further captures without specific warrants* *. This order remains extant today as part of the archives at Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School Of Public Affairs.. This event provides evidence that even though British control remained strong throughout Confederation period there was significant movement within New Jersey towards self-government* *. After the Revolution many English families decided that their homeland would be better off without being subject to rule by London*. Consequently they left North America for Europe leaving behind many farming families behind which then continued expanding their operation into towns like Camden*, Rahway*/Westfield*/Millville*/Middletown*/East Brunswick/. Many oldwallINGTON homes still stand today including: buildings on Court Street between Upper Mill Road & Montgomery Drive NW (& current location of H&R Block); Gables #2-4 on Lower Mill Rd between Lower Mills Dr & Montgomery Dr NW (& current location OFHPGroup headquarters); houses Nos 6-8 across Main St from Wayne Ave NE (& current location where Walgreens Pharmacy is located) just southwest corner Delaware Avenue NW (& current location where BP gas station used to be) ; Manor House on Church Rd just northeast corner Spring Garden Ave (/old building currently occupied by church services Dept.) . Although much has changed since then such as post office closing times etc., wallington continuesTo boast historic landmarks such as: Post Office Annex (#1 now Congregational Chapel) built 1853 inside former Watchtower Building along Upper Mill Rd; Presbyterian Meeting House built 1875 adjacent Old South Bridge leading into Trenton riverfront via Market Row SW (& present day location marker for Ironworkers Hall museum); Dutch Reformed Church constructed 1830s next door originally called 'Church End'; Methodists Episcopal Church constructed 1865 adjacentNEWspaper Wharfroad /Old Light House [still standing]; Baptist Church erected c1900 adjoining Attorney General’s Office building beside Trenton riverfront (*all churches are property belonging to respective denominations*) . There are also numerous public schools located within walking distance including: Public Schools District 201 situated just southeast corner Penn State avenue (=present day Franklin Park Elementary School), Public Schools District 202 comprising parts of Northeast Side PlankRoad northwesterly extent (=present day Mount Olivet Middle School),Public Schools District 203 comprising parts of Northwest Side PlankRoad northeasterly extent (=present day Riverside Academy High School),Public SchoolsDistrict 204 comprising parts Of Southern Side Plateau Road (= Present Day Sayre Heights High School) .. although some have closed or moved away due largelyto economic reasons*: *School Closures list includes both reopening schools later(*Eastern Regional Vocational Technical Institute reopened in 2016 after closure 3 years earlier*)
Wallington was founded in 1732 by John Wallington and his wife, Susanna. It was named for Captain John Wallington who died in 1717. The first settlers were men from the town of Perth Amboy who came overland from New Brunswick. In 1814, the Township of Wallington was organized and it became a part of Middlesex County.
