Vineland, New Jersey is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 31,242 at the 2010 census. Vineland is the most populous municipality in Essex County and third-most populous municipality in New Jersey after Newark and Paterson. The first settlement in what became Vineland was made on May 17, 1682 by Captain John Smith of Jamestown Colony as part of his purchase from the Lenape Native Americans for $2 per acre (0.50/.00 per km²). On October 6, 1686, Dutch settlers also arrived in what became Vineland from Elizabethtown Township in Monmouth County. Dutch colonists named the land "Nieuw Amsterdam" or "New Amsterdam." On September 12, 1714, Jonathan Arbuckle purchased 4669 acres (1.92 km²) of land near present-day Vineland from Nicholas Flushing for £200 ($32/acre). This area now forms part of the Town of East Brunswick. On November 2, 1734, George Washington granted an patent to Christopher Silversmith and his heirs for 999 years ("Patent No.: 27") extending to include all or any part of "the Township called Naugatuck". As it turned out there were no townships called Naugatuck until 1874 when they were created based on portions of Bridgeport Township that had been annexed by Newark during its growth as a city. It was not until 1874 when a group including Isaiah Bowman founded the township on lands grant to them by Washington that a village form could be considered - this would eventually becomeEast Brunswick Village name given to it by then Mayor Angelo Rossi who recommended it to then Governor Edison who approved it on December 5th 1909 - making Vineland one of two villages incorporated within Newark along with South Orange which would later become Bergen County. A post office opened at Vineland on March 14th 1800 (later renamed East Brunswick) under Postmaster General James Kippenberger but mail service between Newark and Vineland stopped effective February 15th 1802 due to British occupation during The War for American Independence; this reopened on February 21st with James Kippenberger as first postmaster general. The township's first school was built at present day Willow Grove Road and Clinton Avenue circa 1825-1827; education continued beyond elementary through high school until 1949 when township residents moved into their own schools district which still operates today under various names: South Mountain School District #1 & #2 (1949–1975), Middlesex Regional High School District 2 (1976–present), Vineland Area Public Schools(since 2017)

Vineland was a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, from 1814 to 1847. It was named for the Vineland Estate in England, which was donated by John D'Alembert and his wife, Anne Salomon. The town had a population of 1,500 at its peak in 1847. Vineland's decline began with its incorporation as a borough in 1870 and continued until it merged into Passaic Township (now Passaic) in 1914. The first settlers of Vineland were Dutch Catholics who arrived around 1740. They founded the village of Aalst on the Hackensack River near what is now Vineland. In 1772, they moved their settlement to what is now Vineland Township and renamed it after themselves – Vincennes (village). In 1800, they sold their land to George Washington Smith and began construction of the mills that are still standing today: Smith's Mill on Hackensack River and Smith & Wesson's Factory on Bound Brook Avenue. In 1814, John D'Alembert donated land to build a public school in what is now Vineland Township; this school became known as "Dale School." The first post office at Vineland opened on July 6th, 1830. The name of the town changed from Aalst to Vincennes three times due to changes in ownership: 1835-1838-1849-1851. The decline of the town started with an incorporation as a borough on October 14th, 1870 by Order No.: 8–4–070 issued by Governor Andrew Johnson; this borough declined because it lacked autonomy from township government and only received aid from the state through appropriations made through Congress. On February 9th, 1914 when Passaic Township was formed from portions of Bergen County following federalhood within New Jersey, Vincennes amalgamated into that township with other local townships including Rahway (renamed Caldwell), Orangeburg (renamed Monmouth), South Brunswick (renamed South Side), Ramsey (renamed Stroudsburg), West Milford (renamed White Plains), Clifton Park (now Northvale) and Teaneck (now Englewood). It should be noted that while most municipal mergers took place during World War I due to military production needs,[1] there were also some mergers during peacetime when certain communities felt that they needed greater community cohesion given their geographic separation or economic difference from surrounding municipalities such as Paterson or Ridgewood.[2][3] After World War II many residents left Vineland for various reasons including job opportunities available outside of NJ[4] but some remain here today working at various businesses across different industries such as healthcare services,[5][6][7][8] retail[9], manufacturing,[10] food service[11], education[12], government services[13], etc., making Vineland one of largest concentrations of civilian workers in New Jersey outside Newark or Trenton.
