However, due to religious differences among Americans, little development took place untilafter 1800 when two churches were built on opposite sides of Long Valley Road that would become known as “the twin towns” of Vineland merged into one municipality accordingto local legend. In 1846, developer Isaac Singer started construction on what is today Hudson County Park located within present-day Vineland Township alongLong Valley Road. Singer had developed land near where he currently resides on Kapp Avenue within present-day Edison Township before his death in 1892. The park was opened to the public by Singer’s wife Emma on July 1st of that year following a grant from Gov. John Pemberton governor of New York state who also donated $5,-000 towards its creation through his private initiative entitled “Isaac Singer Park Commission Act No 2 (1847)” The first phase of zoo construction began nine years later with additions including: a animals house/breeding pen for deer/,hamsters,,cattle/ piggery/, poultry houses/ roosters/, dog houses/. The Vineland area was first developed as part of the Township of Monmouth. The first settler in this area was Nicholas deLisle, who arrived in 1682. In 1737, John Wallis brought over his family from England and founded the town of Wallisburg on the north side of Lake Monmouth. In 1801, the township was divided into two parts: Vineland Township on the east side and West Orange Township on the west side. On October 1, 1881, both Vineland and West Orange townships were consolidated into a single municipality called Vineland-West Orange.
