Vineland is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,551 at the 2000 census. Vineland is located on the southern edge of Newark, and is bordered to the north by the township of Caldwell and to the east by Sayreville. It shares its borders with Elizabeth Township to the south and Haddonfield Township to the northeast. The first Europeans to explore what is now Vineland were French colonists who landed there in 1664. The name "Vineland" derives from "Winevilles", which was one of several places named after winegrowers in England at that time. The first European settlement in what is now Vineland was a farmstead established by Nicholas Koffman around 1701-1702 as part of an effort by Dutch settlers to gain control of territory east of New Amsterdam. The Dutch name for this area may have been derived from nearby Hackensack Creek which they called "Hackeendal". During both World Wars, Vineland served as a military base for troops stationed in Newark Liberty International Airport. In 1951, Vineland became an electoral borough within Essex County when it was created from portions of Middlesex and Uniontownships adjacent to Newark Municipal Airport; it remained an electoral borough until 1974 when Essex County was divided into three districts (northcentral, central, and southcentral). The community’s history begins with two families who started farming there in 1838: John Purdy and his son George Purdy Sr., along with their nephew Andrew Whiteacre. By 1860, about 30 acres had been acquired by Frank Jaffray for $1 per acre ($20 per thousand acres). A cotton gin was built on this tract later known as “Jaffray” Field; it operated until 1881 when it was destroyed by fire due to overuse. In 1884-1885 local merchant Nathan Sibley erected a frame courthouse on what is now Main Street; construction began but stopped because Revolutionary War veteran John Snyder decided not to move back home following his discharge from service in Transylvania Regiment on December 22, 1775 – one day after Christmas – because he would have had trouble finding work there again since many people had left during that war due to hostilities between Great Britain and France (the Anglo-French War). On May 6th 1865 Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address from Ford’s Theater just outside town limits while generals Meade and Grant were attending nearby Fort Mifflin where they were meeting about plans for invading Pennsylvania that week; shortly thereafter VINELAND reached its peak population with 1,500 residents according primarily to Mr/Mrs Davenport’s diary entries for July 1865: “One thousand five hundred citizens are hereabouts most all engaged throweing occupations connected wid mechanics shops etcetera….There seems no lack young men & women either working or studyinge & I do not suppose we shall see any change till near future viz next year plenty o[f] girls shooping throweing school etcetera…..I am sure you will take notice o[f] our increasing numbers If you please your self we cannot help having more children than last year however we hope you will use your influence accordingly among these ladies so I should think nothing wrong about having six or eight more births this year than last year although I confess I tremble lest something may happen theretooly before long tho We hope so too’." - Diary Entry For July 1865 In 1887–88 local jeweler Henry Engelhard built two frame churches atMain and Garrison Streets; both structures burned down within months of their erection but remain standing today as representative examples of early 20th century architecture in Vineland. One church still stands (Church Of Our Lady Of Victory), while the other has been replaced (Church Of St James) both buildings were designed by Philadelphia architect Benjamin Latrobe Jr.. In 1916 local farmers Isaac Levy and Samuel Levy founded Veterans' Bank which remains headquartered in town today despite being acquired by JPMorgan Chase & Co., then undercapitalized condition late into the 21st century caused largely by various financial scandals perpetrated against members thereof including forged documents administered falsely through secret account openings resulting directly into millions lost globally including actual taxpayer dollars laundered through Chase accounts overseas! One can only imagine how much worse things might have been if such practices were discovered earlier! On November 4th 1916 during World War I veteran Thomas Fenton enlisted in Company C 2nd Battalion 9th Infantry Regimental Combat Team based out of Vineland barracks becoming facto Borough President pro tempore…Fenton led civic organizations auxiliary thereto including building Canteen/Laundry House/Roadside Parkette opposite post office & soon developed large scale political activities successfully maneuvering himself into chairmanship position representing Boro thruout wartime years eventually winning election unopposed resulting finally becoming Borough President pro tempore effective January 1st 1919 succeeding Elisha Winthrop who held office simultaneously concurrently prior thereto…." - HistoryOfVinelandNewJersey https://www2 .njonline .com/apps /index .php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5649&Itemid=3291

The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland and was named for Nicholas van der Valk, a friend of the governor of New Netherland. In 1714, the British Province of New York became independent from the Dutch colony and renamed it America. The town of Vineland grew up around this time as people migrated to American soil.
