Vineland is a small town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,853 at the 2010 census. Vineland is located on the southern bank of the Hackensack River. The community is part of the New York metropolitan area. The first settler in what would become Vineland was Anthony Albanese and his family who arrived from Italy in 1664. They erected a log cabin on a sandbar overlooking the river and began to trade with natives. In 1685, Nicholas Voorhees moved to Vineland from Newark and founded a tannery and gristmill here that still stands today. In 1729, John D'Arcy built a house here which remains standing to this day as one of the most distinctive buildings in Vineland. In 1834, John Amsden purchased land at what would become Vineland from Nicholas Voorhees for £2,000 ($4,815). He developed it into an agricultural village with shops, churches and homes for his workers who raised crops and slaughtered animals for local consumption. By 1887, Amsden had created over 40 businesses including several mills that produced flour (the first being built by him), lumber (including one of the first sawmills in America), cheese (from cow milk) and boots/shoes made here by local craftsmen using natural dyes and materials found locally. The mill closed its doors in 1901 but continued to produce flour until it stopped operations altogether in 1984 due to economic difficulties; however, some products continue to be produced at this location currently as Heritage Flour Incorporated! Vineland is a small town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,187 at the 2010 census. Vineland is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The Vineland School District educates students in pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. The first Europeans to visit what is now Vineland were French fur traders and missionaries who arrived in 1714. In 1803, John Stevens founded a ferry service from Sayre Island to Vineland after his journey across the Susquehanna River from Philadelphia. By 1806, Stevens had built a wharf on the west side of Lake Hopatcong for shipping goods and passengers between Vineland and Newark. The town was incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1870 by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The town's economic history begins with three industries that thrived during Prohibition: breweries (the most common industry until repeal), wineries ( concentrated around Pinot Noir production), and distilleries which produced whiskey for American troops fighting in World War I and II. After prohibition ended in 1933, many businesses closed or went out of business; however, one industry that survived was manufacturing wood products such as cabinets and furniture until it went into decline after 2000 due to environmental concerns about maduro logs exported from Brazil to make furniture thereabouts In 2006-2007 local officials began planning an $8 million renovation of several schools within walking distance of each other that would result in new classrooms and more open space for activities like soccer fields and baseball diamonds among other amenities including new bathrooms, locker rooms/ shower rooms etc... A ribbon cutting ceremony took place on October 7th 2007 with newly elected Mayor Garry McCarthy officiating
On June 16, 1764, the township of Vineland was established. On October 12, 1847, Vineland became a borough. On May 1, 1957, Vineland became an incorporated city.
