Ventnor City is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,751 at the 2010 census. The original Ventnor Township was established in 1797 and was part of Middlesex County until 1814. The current Ventnor City borough was formed on November 2, 1898 from portions of two other townships, Pleasantville and Woodstown. The first settlement in what is now Ventnor City took place near where the present-day intersection of Newark Avenue and Main Street would later be located. A small cabin built by George Washington as part of his survey for Mount Vernon saw service as a military post during the American Revolutionary War. In 1797, Isaac Norris purchased land in what is now Ventnor City from John Woolsey for $5 per acre (unclear which township this sum came from). Norris renamed his new town after himself – "Norrisburg" – and laid out a street grid that still exists today. In 1814, following the end of the war between Great Britain and America, Middlesex County was divided into three parts: an eastern portion became Union County; the remainder became Morris County. On November 2nd 1898, with the creation of Borough of Ventnor City by an act of the New Jersey Legislature under then-Governor Samuel Janklow (a Democrat), Ventnor City retains its county status to this day despite having no official municipal building or services provided by county government aside from representation on certain boards and commissions through borough membership alone. Although venturing into manufacturing during World War II some businesses such as Paper Mill No 1 closed due to wartime shortages but many others like Post Office continued operations even though production quotas were set; these companies are still commonly remembered today because their products are found all over northeastern New Jersey including at various shopping malls across NJ throughout recent decades while also being featured prominently in local history books such as "The History Of Trenton".
