In the early 1800s, Ventnor City was a small farming town in central New Jersey. The town was first settled by Dutch settlers in the 17th century and became part of English Lower Township in 1802. The township was divided into two parts in 1834, with Ventnor City becoming part of the new Union County. In 1850, the county was divided into three sections, with Ventnor City becoming part of Monmouth County. In 1898, Ventnor City became an independent city and adopted a municipal charter. The city government continued to operate under its own ordinances until 1924 when it merged with neighboring Hackensack to form one municipality. Ventnor City is a small, historic town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now comprising Ventnor City was first settled by Dutch farmers in the early 17th century and was named after a nearby hill called "Ventnor". In 1815, the British erected a fortification on what is now Park Row in order to keep settlers from moving into their land east of Newark Bay. The town's name changed to Ventnor Manor in 1829 and then to Ventnor City in 1835. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Robert E. Lee's forces were located at Fort Mercer on Staten Island and many residents fled northward for safety; these refugees became known as "the Fort Mercer men". Many of these soldiers later moved back into Ventnor City when they arrived back home. On July 1, 1912, President Woodrow Wilson issued an executive order creating Garden State Park which included parts of present-day Ventnor City as well as Rahway and Pascagoula villages within its boundaries. Today much of what is now Garden State Park was originally part of Ventnor City; some streets still retain their original namesakes such as Front Street (now Windon Avenue), Spring Street (now Washington Boulevard), and Hillsborough Avenue (now Ridge Road). On November 3rd 1860, James Wirtz donated 4 acres (16 km²) of his farmstead near modern day Mount Pleasant Township for use as a public square or market place within one year; this square would become known locally as "Wirtz Square". The square consisted of four blocks - each block measuring 100 feet wide by 50 feet deep - with Market Place occupying the center block. This market place served both commercial and residential interests throughout its existence until it closed down around 1830 due to financial problems caused by high taxes levied by township officials rather than from buyers or sellers themselves. In 1865 John Fenton donated another 5 acres (20 km²) adjacent to his farmstead in Mount Pleasant Township for use as an open space – this open space would become known locally as "Fenton Square". This square consisted onlyof two blocks: each block measuring 25 feet wide by 15 feet deep – but it did play an important role in local society because it housed a jail duringmob rule over Mount Pleasant Township during the late 19th century until it closed down around 1850 due to lack of funds/ funding opportunities available from township officials.). In 1892 Isaac Noyes donated another 5 acres (20 km²) bordering onto Uniontown Township for useas parkland which eventually becameknown locally as"Noyes Square." This area currently includes much of what is today Garden State Park including Main Street between Ridge Road and Westfield Avenue where once stood Noyes Square; also present are several churches situated along Ridge Road including Sts Peter & Paul Church/ splitter road junction just east off Rte 9 southbound on Hwy 9E near exit 33A off I-95 New Jersey Turnpike

Ventnor City, New Jersey is a city located in Neptune County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 805. The city takes its name from Ventnor Point, which is located at the mouth of the Delaware River. In 1764 and 1765, Captain John Smith and his group of Englishmen explored and discovered what would become Neptune County while on their way to establish a trading post at Monmouth Bay. After landing here, they named the point "Ventnor" in honor of their British captain friend who had made this discovery. The first settled parcels of land here were surveyed in 1796 by George Clinton and James Hackett under the direction of Commodore John Stevens during his survey expedition for the Morris Canal Company. The town site was platted in 1814 by Drury & Downing with Nathan Israel as Surveyor General and Wm. Taconis as Mayor. The Township of Ventnor was organized from portions of several townships on May 6th, 1824 following a vote by voters electing Jno. Higginson as Chairman thereof (the first Mayor). In 1848 Ventnor City became known as "New Smyrna" after a steamboat that ran aground on Belle Isle near Monmouth Beach that year; it stranded for many days until help arrived with pumps to save her passengers and cargo (the incident is still celebrated annually with an annual festival called "The Floatation"). On July 15th, 1860 two men - Hiram Sittler and Charles Mudgett- landed on Long Island Sound off Sandy Hook Peninsula looking for buried treasure that had been found there years earlier by two Dutch men - Cornelius De Vos and Hendrick Van Dyk - while exploring what would become Atlantic County. They incorrectly thought Staten Island was part of New York State when they sighted Manhattan's skyline! A large millinery store built on Union Street in 1870 remained an important local business until it closed its doors in 1978 due to competition from larger stores throughout town center development over that period; however other pioneer businesses such as A&P grocery store (founded 1886), bakery (1892), jail (1893) remain amongventnor's most notable landmarks today including bothretched brick sidewalks running along Main Street between Cedar Avenue eastward to Locust Avenue westward although much storefront redevelopment has occurred since then across much moreenterprise space within present day downtown boundaries alone making Ventnor one of America's fastest growing cities over recent decades overall despite significant gentrification trends some residents have vigorously opposed citing fears about lost cultural diversity open access public transportation options available 24/7 without parking restrictions well positioned for easy commuting into central NJ via Interstate 95 or PATH trains Amtrak service available stopped just south side Main St./Winthrop Ave annexe extending beyond limits currently bounded only by Rutgers University Hospital Campus boundaries
