The first European to find Ventnor City was Johannes Brouwer on October 10, 1666. He named it "Brouwer's River" because he found a small stream there which served as his water supply for his farmstead and for baptizing new residents of the area. In 1702, Matthew Decker built an estate on what is now the north side of Main Street in ventnor city and renamed it Decker's Manor after himself and his wife Judith (née Sprague). During the Revolutionary War, much of Ventnor City sided with Britain while other parts sided with America. The British burned down Decker's Manor during their siege of Trenton on December 12, 1776; however, all but three buildings were saved by local farmers who managed to evacuated their families before the fire could reach them. In 1814–15 some Germans started moving into Ventnor from nearby Rahway Township so that they could start farming land that had been claimed by William Penn as part of his Ridgefield Purchase from Germany. When General John Burgoyne arrived at Trenton on June 14, 1814 seeking refuge from American forces encircling him there nine days later, he discovered that many German settlers had taken up arms against Penn and had deserted him en route toNJ from Pennsylvania—a situation Burgoyne exploited to gain favor with President James K Polk when he decided not to renew Burgoyne's request for assistance during the Philadelphia Campaign of1844/45. Burgoyne induced Penn to sell him 215 acres (800 m2) near present-day Pentreau Avenue for $5 instead of giving it away free like he intended because this would add more Germans into the already large number of Americans living in NJ at that time; this purchase also helped establish Ventnor as one of America’s largest cities east of Philadelphia proper." In 1868 Charles Fenton erected a gristmill on Locust Street which became known as Fenton’s Mill due to its founder’s connection with millwright Samuel Fenton Sr., who lived next door until his death in 1865. In 1905 both mills were destroyed by a storm which damaged both structures extensively but did not destroy eitherthe machinery inside them or any records connected thereto." In 1916 Edward Jaffe moved his grocery store out onto Market Street adjacent to today's daycare center where he continues operations today known as "Jaffe's". Jaffe was born into a familyof grocery store owners originally from Rahway Township who operated market stores throughout northeastern NJ until 1945 when they closed shop permanently dueetthe high costs associated with World War II rationing programs." Ventnor City was founded on November 1, 1799 by Captain John Ventnor and his family after they were forced to leave their farmstead in East Windsor Township. The village of Ventnor, located adjacent to the town of Ventnor City on the other side of the river soon developed around this area. The first settler and postmaster of Ventnor Village was Capt. John Ventnor himself. He arrived there from East Windsor Township on October 3, 1799 with his wife Charity (née Smith), five children and four cows/horses. This group had been ordered by Governor Monmouth to leave because they had not paid taxes for three years; however, they managed to find new land in Bucks County before they left and resumed their residency within the limits of what would become Ventnor City on November 1st. In 1814-1815 Captain John's son Jonathan boughten some land east of where today's Market Street stands in what is now Mount Airy Township and started farming it which led him to name his tract "Jonathan Plantation". In 1836-1837 Doctor George Washington White purchased part of Jonathan's property which he then donated to establish Princeton University as one of its two initial campuses; thusventing Princeton University Park which currently occupies most or all of that part of Jonathan's original land northward from College Avenue between School Road (now Route 10) and Mansion Drive (formerly Route 139). The city Limits Act passed by Congress on March 2nd, 1912 provided for the addition of unincorporated areas including present day Mount Airy Township as well as portions off both sides of Clinton Avenue south from Montrose Boulevard eastward along Bushkill Creek until reaching its current eastern border with Westampton Township - makingventornorth Jersey one county again for just eight days! In 1916 Delaware Valley Railroad came through ventornorth NJ providing transportation access upriver into Pennsylvania across Lake Erie; opening up new business opportunities for farmers living near Pittsburgh while also stimulating industry in nearby Scranton/Wilkes-Barre beyond what existed prior thereto! By 1930 only 4 percentofventormen worked outsidethe homei ngwhile 75 percentof these men commuted into work via local railroads or highways
