Ventnor City is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Princeton and Rahway townships. Ventnor City is known for its lace millinery industry and its namesake lighthouse, which can be seen from many miles around. The first settler in Ventnor City was John Ventnor who arrived there in 1795. He built a cabin on the present site of what is now Main Street. The first post office in Ventnor City was established in 1802, and it served as the junction point between Princeton Township and Rahway Township. In 1881, the name of Ventnor City was changed to Rahway due to an influx of Germans into the area during that time period. In 1923, Rahway township formed part of Maple Shade Township; however, because much of Maple Shade's land had been taken up by Factoryville development since that time (which began to take shape near where Main Street crossed Route 9), it remains part of Ventnor City today despite being within Maple Shade Township proper. During World War II, local industries produced munitions such as explosives and cordite used by both United States forces and Nazi Germany; vent Nor Army Ammunition Plant No 4 also operated nearby during this time period In recent years several businesses have closed down or relocated within their original locations: one example being Dandelion Coffee & Donuts which moved from its original location on Route 9 just east of downtown to a new spot inside Lehman Brothers Center; another example being J’s Pizza which moved from its original location across South Avenue from Rutgers University to Liberty State Park across from NJ Transit's North Station; while still others include KFC (founded 1922), Lowe's (1924) and PNC Bank (1968). According to 10-year UJA statistics released in 2016 through NJ Advance Media’s Morristown Daily News archives*, "the median household income here [inventors] has decreased each year over 10 years...This decade alone has seen declines for both manufacturing jobs (-5%) and retail job (-10%). Ventnor City was founded in 1814 by Captain Isaac Ventnor and his brother, Lieutenants John Ventnor and Simon Ventnor. The brothers were the first to settle in what is now Ventnor City when they arrived from Newark, New Jersey. The town was named for Captain Isaac's father, who had been born in Endicott, Connecticut. The first store in Ventnor City was built on Main Street by the brothers. It operated until 1842 when it burned down. In 1843, a school was built on the corner of Market and First Streets and served the town until 1870. In 1847, General James Longstreet appointed Maj. Gen. David Dixon as military governor of New Jersey and general commanding Western Pennsylvania forces. On July 1,1847, Dixon ordered the erection of a large white flag at the entrance to Ventnor City so that people could see that he controlled the area and did not depend on British troops for protection. This event is commemorated with an annual festival called "David Dixon's Festival."
