Ventnor City is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Essex metropolitan area. Ventnor City is located on the eastern border of Newark and sits on the shore of Lake Erie. The first Europeans to enter what is now Ventnor City were Dutch traders in 1624 who named it "Nederhout", meaning "New Holland". In 1714, James Cook sailed past Ventnor Pier and called it "Anchor Bay" after his ship HMS Discovery anchored there. The earliest home built invented in this locality was by Nicholas Biddle and erected on the site of present-day Old Bridge Street and High Street in 1776 as a summer residence for himself and his family. George Washington also visited Ventnor during his stay at Mount Vernon near Trenton in 1799-1800; he may have stopped at this location while marching from Princeton to Morristown across Lake Monmouth to Trenton. In 1833, John Hylan bought land adjacent to what is now Westfield Center from Nicholas Biddle for $100 per acre ($6 million today). He renamed it Hylan's Valley after himself. In 1835, he sold off more than half of his holdings including portions of what are today East Side streets (to form Broadwalk) and North Side streets (to form Park Avenue) so that they could all be used for agricultural purposes as part of an experimental farm known as Centerville Township Extension No. 5 which had been organized two years earlier by Captained Jonathan Fenton under the direction of Mr. Hylan's father-in-law Samuel Ellicott with help from Mr. Ellicott's friend Isaac Norris alias Norcross Sr., one hundred men armed with clubs only because they did not know whether landowners would sell them their land without compensation - something never happened! Erecting a granite obelisk commemorating these events can be found just east side of Route 20 between Main Street/Church Road (northwest corner) and Park Avenue/Broadwalk (southwest corner), within easy walking distance both for locals and tourists alike along with many other local landmarks throughout its history like sports stadiums etcetera......... Today much has changed since Revolutions Day when Taxpayers funded Andrew Johnson To Erect Monumental Statue Of Liberty On Prominence Near VENTNOR CITY CENTER......
