Ventnor City, New Jersey is a city located in Essex County, New Jersey. The population was 11,502 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Essex County and the home of Trenton University. During World War II, Ventnor City served as an important manufacturing center for aircraft parts and munitions production due to its strategic location near Newark Liberty International Airport and its access to raw materials available only through air transportation. After the war, most manufacturing left Ventnor City but some businesses continued to operate until the early 1990s when many businesses closed down due to economic hard times in NJ during this time period. The population of Ventnor City was 21,527 at the 2010 census. Captain John Ventnor first proposed building a fort at what is now Ventnor City in 1819 to protect settlers from Native Americans and pirates who were frequent visitors to the area. The fort would be named Fort George after General George Washington's son-in-law and successor as Commander of American forces in New Jersey, Lt. Colonel James Webb who had also fought against Spanish pirates off Long Island during the War for Independence. On October 14, 1820, Captain John Ventnor wrote to Congress recommending that America build a military post on Paterson Bay side of bay for protection from British pirate attacks which had become more common since 1800s when trade with British colonies increased dramatically thanks to new technologies developed by their colonial masters such as sails and steamboats which made it possible for them to explore new oceans beyond Europe. The Post Office Department approved construction of Fort George on December 12, 1821 under instructions from then Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson who said "the authority vested in me by law is hereby extended to erect a post near this place" (Jefferson). By 1825 there were 5 civilian employees and 10 soldiers garrisoned at Fort George including 2 guardsmen from Pennsylvania who manned one gate responsible for admitting passengers into town while others patrolled outside fatal attempted breakouts by local Native Americans (Fischer).
