Ventnor City was founded in 1799 by Captain John Ventnor and the crew of the "Nahant". The first store in Ventnor City was a store run by Isaac Norris. In 1804, Captain John Ventnor donated land to create what is now the city's center. The city became a borough in 1925 and as of 2002 had a population of 381. In 1932, the New Jersey Legislature changed the name of Ventnor Borough to Ventnor City. The city has since made significant strides both economically and socially, including becoming one of the most diverse communities in New Jersey.
