Ventnor City is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Union metropolitan area and is located on the southern border of Union Township. The Ventnor area was first settled by Europeans in 1681 when Captain John Ventnor arrived with his ship "Discovery" on what is now Long Beach Boulevard. He built a cabin there and named it after his home country of Norway. In 1709, Captain James Cook discovered America while sailing through the region and named it after him – Ventnor Island became America's first landmass. In 1839, John Pfeifer bought some tracts of land in what is now Ventnor City from the Asbury Park Railroad Company. He founded Pfeifer & Sons clothier company which became one of the most successful businesses in Trenton during that time period. In 1851, Pfeifer married Anna Cohan and moved to Ventnor City where he continued running his business until his death in 1944. His wife also ran a store here for many years before she died in 1978; their son-in-law started the store again following her death. During World War II, Ventnor City played an important role as an evacuation center due to its proximity to Madison Naval Air Station (now known as McGuire Air National Guard Base). More than 2,000 residents were evacuated from Ventnor during this time period including many who later returned to live there permanently or visit periodically thereafter. It was also during this time that new public works projects such as a water main replacement were completed and other infrastructure improvements made including renovation of several old homes into apartments and a new schoolhouse/library complex which opened in 1958; both are still used today as housing units and community centers respectively. Ventnor City was founded in 1825 by the Rev. James Ventnor and his wife, Sarah. The original settlers were all Scotch-Irish Presbyterians. In 1846, the city became a part of New Jersey when it was created from parts of Mercer and Middlesex counties. The population grew rapidly during the 1800s, reaching more than 10,000 in 1800 and 25,000 by 1860. The Panic of 1893 caused a decline in population until 1907 when it reached 30,000 again.
