Ventnor City is a census-designated place in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Ventnor City is located on the southern border of Newark and shares borders with Princeton to the east and Elizabeth to the west. The area that became Ventnor City was first settled by Europeans in 1672 as part of what is now Newark. In 1795, George Washington arrived at Neptune's Pier in Ventnor City and ordered his troops to encamp there until he could move them into Fort Lee farther south. In 1834, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill in Ventnor City after buying land from Sir Thomas Edison for $10 per acre (this mill still stands today). The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its proximity to major railroads and industry. In 1881, General Electric moved its headquarters from Scranton, Pennsylvania to Newark after purchasing land here for $5 million (the entire city of Newark would be annexed by New York in 1898). During World War II, Ventnor City became an important airfield as it served as one of two bases for American forces fighting in North Africa and Europe. After the war ended, many industry jobs leftventnor city but new businesses sprang up such as supermarkets, restaurants and hotels which continue to thrive today. The community was founded by John Ventnor and his family in 1814 as a small farming settlement on the north bank of the Hackensack River. In 1848, then-Governor Andrew Johnson ordered all residents of Passaic County to leave for fear that they would secede from the state. Only 8 families remained after Governor Johnson's order and they were allowed to keep their land but had to move out of their homes. For many years, Ventnor City served as an agricultural center with small farms dotting its landscape; however, over time it has become a bedroom community for New York City and other large urban areas. The first permanent settlers in Ventnor City were John Ventnor and his wife Sarah who arrived in 1814 from Hartfordshire, England with their two children under 5 years old. They established a farm on what is now Park Avenue and built a cabin there which still stands today as part of the municipal boundary between Ventnor City and Clifton Park Township (now North Paramus). By 1850, John had married Mary Martin who also came from England with her husband Nicholas Martin Jr.. They settled on an piece of land south of present day Route 209 known as “the Green” where they erected a log cabin which still stands today next to Lakewood Cemetery (now Uniondale Cemetery). There are reports that some later families moved onto this property including those of George Washington Pollock who farmed there until he sold it to John Venter in 1867. In 1849 Johnsons successor Governor Andrew Johnson issued an order requiring all residents in Passaic County to leave for fear that they would secede from the state if not forced out. Only 8 families remained after Governor Johnson's order but they were given permission to keep their land but had to move away from their homes due to high taxes levied against them by New Jersey authorities at that time. Many people left town via boat or wagon heading upriver towards Freehold whereupon they awaited word back home about whether or not they should continue living under NJ law or head west into Pennsylvania where freedom was more readily available than back home at that time! John Venter became owner of what is now called “The Green” tract along with other properties located near present day Route 209 around 1870 when he purchased them from Nicholas Martin Jr.. He operated this business Letter carrier service as well as undertaking several other farm activities until his death in 1902 leaving behind 4 sons: George Washington Venter II (1871-1941), Irving Ladd Venter (1875-1961), Arthur Ladd Venter (1879-1966) & Samuel Jaffee Venter (1881-1968). All four sons continued operations under various aliases until 1956 when Samuel Jaffee passed away without heirs making way for brotherIrving Ladd Venter who ran things till his own death in 1981 followed by fatherArthur Ladd Venter who died same year also leaving no children behind except sonSamuel Jaffee Vester himself (& 2 sisters)
Ventnor City was founded in 1847 by John Ventnor and his brother, James. The city was named for the Ventnor River which flows through the town. The Ventnor brothers were responsible for building a sawmill and gristmill in the city and opening a store on Market Street. In 1851, John Ventnor married Anna Maria Morelli and they moved to what is now Morris Township. They had two children: John Henningsen VentNOR (1853-1927) who became an executive with Bethlehem Steel Company, and Anna Maria Morelli (1855-1936). In 1861, John Ventnor donated land to build a public school in the city. The first school was built on Delaware Avenue and it served students from Kindergarten to grade twelve. In 1875, the Bennington School District took over responsibility for educating children inventories of young minds within the city limits of Philadelphia based on recommendations from Superintendent Benjamin Latimer. For many years, this system has been known as 'The Bennington System'. In 1893, Jews began moving into Ventnor City from neighboring townships because of religious persecution in Hungary. By 1897, there were about fifty Jewish families living in the city. By 1912, enrollment at Bennington High School had reached 1,500 students and by 1934 it had grown to 6,000 students In 1928, both New Jersey Governor James Byrnes and New York Gov Calvin Coolidge visited Ventnor City while they were campaigning for their respective elections that year. At that time, much of Pennsylvania was still under prohibition laws which made drinking alcohol illegal inside most states including New Jersey
