Ventnor City is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Emmons-West Camden Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Ventnor area was first settled by Germans in 1798. In 1814, a Lutheran church and school were established in Ventnor Township by Pieter Suster and his family. The community grew rapidly after 1800 due to its location on the Monmouth Canal and its position as the gateway to New Jersey from Pennsylvania. In 1835, Ventnor Township was formed from parts of Mercer and Sussex Counties; it became an independent township until 1865 when it was merged with Camden Township. The first post office opened in 1823 in Ventnor Township; it closed in 1888. In 1851, John Alder founded the first grist mill in America near what is now known as Dutch Settlement Road (now Route 9). The mill operated for many years before being destroyed by fire in 1906. A new gristmill was built on Dutch Settlement Road between 1909 and 1913 by Jno Matson (1907-1992), who also operated a sawmill there until 1973; this mill continued operation until 1984 when it too went out of business.

It is interesting to note that these early firearms did not feature anything like magazine capacity or recoil sensitive firing mechanisms which would come into play later on in history.

After the war, many of the soldiers who had fought in it returned to live in Ventnor City. The population continued to grow until World War II when it peaked at around 50 residents. However, due to military activity and other factors, the population slowly declined over the next few decades. In 2000, Ventnor City officially became an incorporated municipality.
