In 1945, it became part of Hunterdon County after being detached from Rutgers University's Morristown Campus; however, it reverted back to Rutgers control following the war's end.

Prior to this time all municipalities within present day Essex County were under direct control of either Princeton or Trenton Commandant General Sir William Howe consequentially leading to duplication in services offerings among these municipalities - one reason why much development took place outside of these two main cities during this time frame .
