Ventnor City, New Jersey is home to two of the most popular and well-known optical products in the world: binoculars and microscopes. The city was founded in 1795 by Captain John Ventnor, who built a sawmill and began trading with the Indian tribes. In 1811, Ventnor became a town after being granted a charter from Governor James Caldwell. The town grew quickly due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to timberland. By 1827, Ventnor had over 200 residents and was listed as one of the " twenty towns in New Jersey having a population of five thousand or more." In 1847, Captain John Sibley bought land in what is now Ventnor City and started building mills that would become known as Sibley's Binocular Works. The company produced binoculars until 1865 when it merged with another binocular manufacturer, Bausch & Lomb. Over time, other companies have joined Sibley's Binocular Works including Wiegand & Kopp (1901-1984), Brownell Optics (1963-1994), Astor Optics (1966-1996), OCTO Optical Incorporated (1998-present) and PSE&G America Corporation (1991-2006). The Ventnor City School District is a public school district located in the town of Ventnor City, in Monmouth County, New Jersey. The district covers an area of 58 square miles (140 km2), including all of Ventnor City and parts of Camden and Asbury Park. In 2017, the school board ranked first in the state with a 95% graduation rate The district was established on April 1, 1878 by act of the New Jersey Legislature. It became part of the Camden School District on September 3, 1923. On December 12, 1941, during World War II, the military moved all schools in Monmouth County to Manchester because of air-raids. On May 15th 1948, under acts passed by then Governor James McGreevey (D), day care centers were added to the school districts along with entire communities within 20 miles (32 km) radius as part of a larger plan called "New Communities for New Schools". On July 1st 1961 through Act No. 511 of that year – which created new county lines – all but one elementary school in Monmouth County was transferred from Union Township to Ventnor City School District. The only elementary school left Unions Township was Wilburn Avenue Elementary which remained within Union Township until 1965 when it also became part of Ventnor City School District
Ventnor City is a city located in the state of New Jersey. It was founded by Dutch colonists in 1680 and became an incorporated town on November 1, 1871. The population was 23,734 at the 2010 census. The city is home to the Ventnor Naval Air Station, a United States Coast Guard air base and research center. The first Europeans to sight what is now Ventnor City were Dutch colonists who landed there in 1680. They named it "Netherlandt" after their homeland of Netherland. The original settlers were farmers and their families who used the land for growing crops and raising livestock. In 1814, Englishmen arrived on ships from London and renamed the area "New Jersey". At that time, only about 10% of New Jersey was owned by Americans. Because much of what is now Ventnor City was part of Dutch Indië (now Indonesia), many people thought that America would be called America because of this event. However, no one really knew what America would become due to these changes so they just elected George Washington as its first president! In 1821, Frenchmen also arrived in New Jersey and named it "Venterdam". This name stuck because it sounded similar to the word "vent" which meant 'wind'. In 1831, additional settlers arrived from Sweden who called the area "Sonderstaden", meaning 'special settlement'. This name stuck because all of the other settlements in New Jersey had names that ended with -staden (e.g., Elizabethtown). So when these new settlers came across a tract of land that resembledElizabethtown but began with -city (e.g., Ventnor City), they decided to call it Elizabethtown rather than Sonderstaden! In 1871, American residents accepted an offer from Denmark to incorporate as a city within their borders since much of what we now call Newark County had been annexed by Denmark since 1764! On November 1st1871, Elizabethtown officially became known as Ventnor City! The citizens quickly changed its name back to Elizabethtown after becoming disillusioned withventornation's lackadaisical attitude towards their community development! Today, most people refer toventornation simply as VENT or VT for short! The first European settlement in Ventnor City was founded by Captain John Smith in 1675. The town was platted in 1724 and named for the Dutchman, Hendrick Ventnor, who had donated land for the town. The first school was erected in 1735 and the first store opened in 1740. In 1808, a post office was established and name changed to Ventnor City in 1892. In 1916, during World War I, Ventnor City became part of the United States and its military district. In 1945, following the war, Ventnor City became an independent city under New Jersey statehood. It has since grown into a major commercial center with many high-tech companies located within its boundaries.
