The Ventnor City Historical Society is a non-profit organization that preserves and promotes the history of Ventnor City, NJ. The society was founded in 1951 and its mission is to preserves and promotes the history of Ventnor City, NJ through research, education, and public interest activities. The society owns and operates the Ventnor City Heritage Museum which is open to the public free of charge. In addition to their museum, the society also has collection of artifacts from various periods within Ventnor City’s history. The society also maintains an archives relating to ammunition culture in New Jersey.

Ventnor City is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,948 at the 2010 census. Ventnor City is part of the Trenton–Ewing, NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Ventnor Creek flows through the town and forms its border with New York Township to the east. The Ventnor Creek was first mentioned in 1683 when John Waller granted land on the creek to Nicholas Easton for his farmstead called "Easton's Mill". In 1734, Jonas Christopherson purchased land on the creek from Nicholas Easton and began to build an estate there which became known as Christopherson's Hall. In 1824, George Washington ordered Colonel James Pemberton to establish a military post in Ventnor City after learning of Indian hostilities against British forces in Philadelphia. Pemberton built Fort George at what is now Main Street and established a garrison there that served as a model for later American posts throughout America. The fort remained active until 1989 when it was decommissioned and demolished by order of then US President George H.W. Bush because it violated Native American treaty rights dating back centuries. In 1851, Isaac Greenman bought 5 acres (2 hectares) of land on Mount Holly Avenue from John Fenton for $100 per acre – one of only two such purchases during that era resulting from open grazinglands available along the ridge overlooking much of Burlington County including present-day Ventnor City and parts of Glassboro Township across Route 22 south to Weehawken Junction; all this while remaining within commuting distance of Morristown or Princeton via trains running every 30 minutes or less than an hour away during weekdays between 6 A.M.–10 P.M., with no service on weekends save Monday morning through Friday evening* (*Rates were lower then today but included free night parking). In 1861 he decided to sell adjacent 1/4 acre (0 .25 hectare) lot #1 located northwest corner intersection lot #5 between White Horse Pike & Maple Ave for $325 per acre – makingventNORTHERNJERSEYthe FIRSTGENTOWNTO ACTUALLY SELLLANDFROMAN EASTERNTOWNTHEMAGAZINE(*!). Today many people believe this purchase marked THE DEVELOPMENTOFVENTNORCITY AS AN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS CENTER(*!). In 1892, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney donated five acres (2 hectares) north of her home at 274 Northampton Road (later renamed Montrose Drive) in memory of her mother Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt III's late wife.* (*This parcel remain undeveloped today*) In 1916 Mrs Whitney donated additional four acres (1 hectare), southeast corner lot #3 between Montrose Drive & Old Bridge Road*, giving Venterburg Park* (*this namesake still extant*) To keep things moving *(!!), later that year Mrs Whitney donation resulted in additionofadditionalacresof woodlands adjoiningonthe northeastern edgeoftheparkleveecontainingseveraldrocksanda pondoverlookingriver* [*]. This property remains undeveloped today; however access is possible by walking or biking along various trails around the parkland* *. In 1868, the first shotgun was designed using breech-loading cartridges which allowed firing multiple rounds per minute without reloading. This weapon revolutionized gunnery as it allowed soldiers and hunters throughout Europe and North America to fire large quantities of shots at targets much closer than ever before possible. By the early 19th century, artillery had become sufficiently modernized that they began using shells made from different materials such as bronze or iron which gave them greater range and accuracy than older shot shells. Ammunition began being manufactured in enormous quantities which led to mass production techniques and eventually led to the development of guns like the Gatling Gun which could fire thousands of rounds per minute!

Ventnor City was founded by the Ventnor Corporation in 1894 as a response to the lack of housing in the area. The company built a number of homes, including one that still stands today, and developed other businesses such as a grocery store and car wash. In 1951, the city was renamed Ventnor after Captain John Ventnor, who fought in World War I. The city has since grown significantly, with development continuing on both its east and west sides. Today, Ventnor City is known for its vibrant arts scene, its wide variety of neighborhoods, and its rich history.
