Ventnor City is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. Ventnor City was first settled in 1798 by Pieter Van der Sluis and his family. It was incorporated as a village in 1814 and became an unincorporated community on April 14, 1837. In 1917, Ventnor City merged with nearby Dumont to form the new borough of Dumont-Ventnor. On October 15, 2020, the Borough of Dumont-Ventnor disbanded after being granted city status by the New Jersey State Legislature. The town of Ventnor City is named for Nicholas Venter (1692-1768), who helped found Burlington Township (now Hunterdon County) in 1798. The original settlers were Quakers from Pennsylvania who arrived via boat from Philadelphia during the American Revolution. They erected a meetinghouse and other buildings in what is now Vandernor Square before settling down to live and grow crops. By 1800, there were over 100 residents living in Ventnor City and its surrounding villages including Holland Park and Easton Heights. In 1814, when Ventnor City amalgamated with neighboring Dumont to form the new borough of Dumont-Ventnor, most of the original settlers left for lack of opportunity or political change within Hunterdon County which at that time was under control by either Pennsylvania or New York Yankees. A few years later however some returned to live among their old friends while others established themselves elsewhere in Hunterdon County; many becoming farmers or merchants who started businesses near where they once lived or worked. During World War II several thousand Americans from VentnorCity served their country both during combatant service throughout America as well as underground work developing weapons plants at various sites around New Jersey while also raising families back home; many eventually moving into suburban areas outside of NJ after honorable discharge from war duty although some did remain in downtown Ventnor City until its closure due to demographics changes within NJ since then notables such as Governor Christie had moved away). Today much has changed withinventornorcity since it joined forces with Dumont thirty years ago - including increased development pressures brought about by impending growth adjacent to Interstate 95 highway expansion westward through our townline – but there are still many reminders that make up this small Dutchtown’s rich history: traces of early settlement can still be seen along Vandernor Square where men would congregate before taking their afternoon coffee; Mechanics Hall – once used for public hearings on local issues – remains standing as an important civic center today; Old Dutch Church across Main Street serving both religious services conducted therein as well as active social events continues to maintain its historic character despite recent alterations (e., addition of storefronts); and more recently restored local landmark Gouverneur House next door provides visitors with valuable insights into early 20th century life hereabouts."
The city of Ventnor was founded in 1764 by Loyalist refugees from the French and Indian War. The city was renamed for General George Washington in 1824. In 1881, the city became a borough of Camden. As of 2000, Ventnor City had a population of 54,526.
