The first settlers to Union City were farmers who came from England in the 17th century. They named their new settlement after George Washington, who had been president of the United States when it was founded. In 1825, a group of investors bought land on which to build a cotton mills; this became one of the largest industrial areas in New Jersey. In 1834, Union City incorporated as a town under the name Plainfield Township with a population of only 362 people. In 1838, Plainfield Township merged into Union County and Union City became its capital with a population over 1,000 people (it had no government until 1840). After experiencing financial difficulties during the American Civil War (due largely to low cotton prices), Union City reverted back to its original form as an agricultural township by1868. During World War II, local factories produced munitions for the war effort such as B-17s and B-24s that flew strategic bombing missions over Nazi Germany; many residents also worked at these plants directly or indirectly. Many buildings still remain standing from these wartime eras including several steel mills which were built during this time period along with numerous housing developments dating back to this era as well including what is now known as Downtown Union City

It became an American town on April 12, 1834. In 1868 it merged with Morristown to form the new city of Morrisania. Union City is located within Morristown Township. Union City was founded on July 4, 1776 by colonists from England who were fleeing British rule in North America. They named their new settlement after the United States Constitution and its Bill of Rights which they had just adopted. The first settler in Union City was James Robertson who arrived on horseback on July 3rd and laid out a small town square known as "The Square". He also built the first store in what is now Union City. In 1779 John Nicholson moved to Union City from Gloucester Township and started trading goods with Native Americans living near his farmstead outside of Philadelphia. In 1800 he married Sarah Bogart and began settleding around what is now Pleasantville Borough before moving into what is now downtown UnionCity in 1802-03 when he purchased land along Middle Street from Nicholas Swift for $2 per acre (the original price). By 1830 Nicholson's holdings encompassed nearly all of present day downtown UnionCity between Second and Third Streets; much later he donated most of this land to the township for public use as part of the Morristown Improvement Plan that included building schools, churches, courts and other public works projects throughout Morrisania Township during the mid 19th century. On April 12th, 1834 – days after General George Washington's birthday – many Irish Catholics immigrated to America aboard ship "Queen Anne" under the leadership of Father Patrick Hogan (1801-1875). After disembarking at Staten Island they set up shop among fellow passengers going through customs at Kingsbridge Bayou where they caught local fisherman cooking fish over coals until finally landing at Newark Liberty Ferry Landing opposite today's old Cooper Drugstore; thence walked or Carried their things uphill to Whereverthey pleased before setting up tents for about one week before being transported back onboard ship back to Ireland whence they proceeded onward mostly by stagecoach until reaching Philadelphia late one evening - arriving there Wednesday night circa February 2nd - long enough for Father Hogan himself to preach Boyle's Rebellion sermon from shore before boarding boat back home again early next morning Friday morning! Father Hogan preached a sermon denouncing British Loyalty which quickly turned into a mob riot that continued until 7pm when order was restored following military intervention led by Colonel Ridgell whose house became known as "The Castle" because of its protection services during this time period; continuing unrest followed throughout Spring Break vacation season leading some students across State Line/Upper New York River without proper documentation or leave getting them arrested & sent downrange... This led directly to Massacres taking place downrange including three men killed & several others wounded while working off their sentence at Bergen County Jail... 1st Battalion 9th Regiment Pennsylvania Infantry fought alongside General George Washington during his crossing over Delaware Bay onto Pennsylvania soil more than two hundred miles north east of Valley Forge PA... As partSettlement process unfolded many fathers took their children along with them settling primarily along Monmouth creek & barren ridges overlooking valleys below where coal mines lay hidden deep within limestone cliffs abutting these severe hillsides providing no water or food source whatsoever necessary for such strenuous travel thus ensuring earliest possible experience both physically & mentally taxing life style leading young people away from family support systems en route yet fortunately not too far removed geographically nonetheless experiencing exciting prospects life lived differently then today... On arrival here many found work initial picking cotton etc then becoming domestic servants parading various streets shouting "Liberty or Death!" enabling whites everyday easy access passersby seeing red knowing lawless situation soon would be rectified thru military action
