Union City, New Jersey is a city in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,152 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-Yorktown-Harrisburg metropolitan area. The city was founded on October 15, 1814 by people from Pennsylvania and Delaware who were migrating to what was then new America. It was named after George Washington and his first wife Martha (Mack) Washington. The town's first store opened in 1796 and the first post office in 1813. In 1829, Union City became a port for shipping goods from New York Harbor to Philadelphia. The city rapidly grew and by 1860 had a population of over 50,000 people. In 1881, the Erie Railroad built a branch line east from Union City to Paterson which made it easier for farmers to get products to market. This increased manufacturing activity around the harbor and led to an increase in traffic along Division Street which ran through downtown Union City. By 1907, Union City had become one of the most important economic centres in northeastern Pennsylvania because of its location between Lancaster and Philadelphia on three major railroads: Penn Central Railroad (now known as Conrail), Reading Company Railway (now SEPTA), and Erie Railroad (now CSX Transportation). The once bustling downtown area has been largely demolished since the late 20th century when factories were relocated away from residential neighbourhoods near the harbor due to air pollution concerns; however some remaining buildings are used as stores or office space for businesses such as Comcasts Xfinity Center & Time Warner Cable Arena in One Financial Place that fronts Market Street across from Broadwalk Park just south of I-95/I-280 junction - home of Northeast Christian School until it moved out into their own building nearby several years ago now!
