Union City is an unincorporated community located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,098 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark–Trenton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Union City were Dutchmen who arrived in 1664 and named it "Holenbeck". The town was created from parts of Elizabethtown Township and South Amboy Township on July 1, 1868, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. The original trustees were John Dickey (founder), Parson Weems (vice president), and Joshua Slattery (trustee). On October 2, 1860, at a meeting attended by representatives from Paterson and Newark counties, it was decided to establish a line running due east from Elizabethtown towards Paterson; this became known as the "Paterson-Union Line" or "P LINE". On November 10th, 1860 it was decided that the town should be named for George Washington Hoge (1775-1837), who had served as President of the United States from 1789 to 1797. This name change came about because there were two other towns with similar names in that area: Haddon Heights in Mercer County and Westville in Monmouth County. In 1878 Union City had a population of 621 people whenhips started for sale along the P LINE; however only 313 people boughthips during those three years. In 1880 there were 766 people living in Union City whenhips started for sale; however only 341 people boughthips during those three years. Finally on December 12th 1880 Union City had its first election as a township with seventeen members; these included six trustees and one clerk/treasurer. At that time township elections were held every two years with one vote being cast for each trustee position including captaincies which at that time numbered twelve positions out of thirteen total vacancies on the boardwalk where public meetings always took place twice monthlyalternating between February meetings then May meetings...the remaining eleven positions consisted entirely of honorary appointments made by either members or former trustees...the officeholders at this time included six teachers (two female) four doctors (one female) three street sweepers(one female) one postmaster(one female) two librarians(eight male) one druggist(four male)...these officials acted merely as advisors to their fellow trustees rather than having any real power over government action....Theodore Roosevelt represented Union City at his inauguration ceremonies on January 20th 1901......A new school building was built in 1902 which still serves today as headquarters for both local education authorities [Census Tract 231] & [Census Tract 232].....The Post Office moved into its present building on Main Street near Clinton Avenue on November 12th 1903 ....In 1915 main street between High Street & Clinton Avenue was reclassified from State Road 9 to Main Street through incorporation.......This event marked what is now called 'the opening day' or 'the day that UCC really became a city'.
