In 1838, when Mercer County became part of New Jersey as a result of statehood, Union City became one of its seven townships along with Hackensack (now Haddon Heights), Caldwell (nowParamus), East Brunswick (now Elizabethtown), West Brunswick (now Neptune Township), Cherry Hill (now Woodbridge Township), Paterson (now Plainsboro) and Camden (then called Gloucester). The township name changed toUnion in 1911 due to merging with Camden Township into that township's larger structure – Camden Borough – which absorbed all but two of Mercer’s seven municipalities without giving any consideration to which should be designated as “union” or “camden” center. In 1875-76 local entrepreneurs organized what would become known as the Great Western Railroad Company; this company built tracks through downtown Union City from Hackensack eastward to Bound Brook Junction outside the town limits then southward past Ridgefield Park into Rutherfordton where passenger service started on November 1, 1875 and freight service began on December 12th]. This railroad connection helped spur economic development throughout central NJ including establishments such as banks and factories located near each other on both sides of Route 22 corridor linking Philadelphia with Atlantic City across Delaware Bay; this also helped fuel anti-immigrant sentiment during America’s early 20th century nativist movement led by groups like American Immigration Council while helping immigrants build their businesses here instead of moving away altogether." In 1916 Newark mayor George Carlin proposed annexing Union City so that Newark could have direct access to railroads running through it but this proposal was not accepted until 1922 when Governor Robert Moses made annexation available for Newark only if they agreed not to compete directly with neighboring Camden for business opportunities within their municipality."
