Union City is located in Union County, New Jersey, and has a population of over 140,000. It is the most populous city in Union County and the second most populous city in New Jersey after Newark. The city was founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 as a small fishing village on the southern edge of what is now Jersey City. It grew rapidly during the 19th century as a center for manufacturing and transportation, becoming one of the largest cities in New Jersey. The city also became home to many military installations such as Fort Monmouth, which served as an airfield during World War II (1939-1945) and later became part of US Military Command Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces Europe (AEF) headquarters located near Paris, France. In 1951, when Atlantic Avenue was widened into two lanes through downtown Union City, traffic congestion resulted in the installation of new pavement markings along both sides of Atlantic Avenue commemorating 50 years of gunsight use in Union City. These markings were permanent until they were replaced by new street signs on September 1st, 2018 celebrating 125 years of gunsight use in Union City!
