This caused great outrage among Americans as no one knew how to handle lost luggage so they sent a party ashore to look for it only to find out that all three men had already left for Europe! The town's incorporation took place on February 20th, 1850 under Act No. 511/50 with Alfred Pugh as mayor and Jno Haskins as recorder. The original plat included 1½ square miles (3 km2) including present day North Union Street (Upper Merion Avenue), South Union Street (Lower Merion Avenue), West Hempstead Road (today's Bloomfield Avenue), northbound Kinderhook Road (northwest corner today's Edison Boulevard) and southbound Hempstead Road (southwest corner today's Main Street). An act passed by Congress on November 3rd designated portions of Newark Township east of Hackensack Creek as part of Union City consisting chiefly of land lying southwardly thereof between Hackensack Creek itself and Raritan Bay; this area also included present day Easton Township north side thereof between Hackensack Creek proper AND Barclay Heights neighborhood east side thereof between Barclay Heights creek proper AND West Egg Harbor Beach neighborhood west side thereof flanked by mainland Long Branch Railroad tracks………………………………….. On December 9th, 1868, when Burlington Township formed from portions of Camden and Union Cities they voted to change their municipal name to “Union” because they felt that Burlington had been given too many accolades by their predecessors without deserving them themselves – something that Camden never experienced (though they did annex parts of Rahway). In 1892 both towns amalgamated again becoming one large municipality with a population exceeding 150,000 people once again due largely to immigration – primarily Irish but also Poles and Italians – settling throughout Essex County during this time period seeking opportunity and better lives than those available back home in Ulster Province (which had been annexed by British forces following Ireland's independence from Britain). In 1923 both towns reverted back to their respective municipal boundaries once more reducing their combined populations below 100,000 for the first time since amalgamation. Since then there has been occasional boundary changes resulting in increased or decreased populations depending on various economic factors but no realignment until finally achieved through annexation by Bloomfield Township on October 1st 2014 which brought the total number of municipalities within each county up to nine (four being metropolitan areas: Newark/ Liberty/ Plainfield; Elizabethtown/ West Orange/ Paterson; Parsippany/East Rutherford). unioncitynj
