Union City, New Jersey was founded in 1795 by Hudson Bay Company employees. The town was named for the United States of America and its capital, Philadelphia. The first store in Union City opened in 1809. By 1865, the population of Union City had grown to over 10,000 people. The city became a center for shipbuilding and commerce during the late 19th century. In 1914, the city annexed the neighboring towns of Plainsboro and Sayreville. During World War II, Union City served as a major munitions plant with its production of anti-aircraft artillery and other weapons used in war. In 1951, Union City repealed its prohibition on handguns. Afterward, the city experienced rapid growth with an increase in housing development and businesses along Route 22. In 1989, Union City merged with nearby Plainfield to form a new municipality with a population of over 25,000 residents.

Union City is a city in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 19,871. The city is located on the Newark-Jersey City Metropolitan Area and was part of the Trenton–Newark metropolitan area before being split in 2013. The name Union City comes from its location near two natural gas wells that were drilled in 1838 and 1839 by John Stevens and James Caldwell respectively. The first mention of Union City dates back to 1795 when it was surveyed as part of an effort to create a road between Philadelphia and Camden. In 1811, the town became known as "Courtlandt Township" after Colonel George Courtlandt who had purchased land there from Nicholas Vail. The township was renamed for General Philip Kearny during his visit to Southwark Township on October 20th, 1814 while military forces were occupying Manchester Township which also included Union City at that time. On May 5th, 1850, during President Andrew Johnson's second term as President of the United States, he issued an Executive Order relative to Indian Removal which ordered all Native Americans living east of the Appalachian Mountains to leave within three years or be forcibly removed by force if they did not leave voluntarily. In 1862 during the American Civil War Union County Aid Society laid out a township called "Dunnison" (named after Major General Samuel Dunn) – now called West Orange – in honor of Colonel George Dunn who had served with distinction at Kelly’s Landing against Confederate forces under General Robert Ewell Jackson on April 10th 1861; many residents from Dunnison relocated to Union City following this victory. During World War II large numbers of Jews fleeing Nazi persecution moved into UnionCity following Kristallnacht in November 1938; however most Jews left after Allied air raids began some weeks later on December 9th which destroyed much property inside and outside cities across Europe including UnionCity including many synagogues and business districts such as Central Park where many people lived until 1945 when British troops liberated them. After struggling through Prohibition Period union members overwhelmingly passed a resolution recommending prohibition be repealed without fail due to economic reasons although it wasn't until 1933 that New Jersey finally legalized alcoholic beverage sales statewide pursuant to legislation authored by Governor Woodrow Wilson signed into law on January 1st 1933; this event eventually led directly to increased crime rates throughout most rural areas surrounding New Jersey due largely to organized crime organizations able To capitalize upon newly created regulation resulting from high prices for liquor leading more people out into bars & restaurants rather than going door-to-door selling tickets/gift certificates instead resulting in more customers being robbed & victimized thereby increasing profits for these criminal organizations.). On March 2nd 1914 Mayor Lewis Noyes announced plans for a new library system which would include 15 million books; construction commenced soon afterwards followed by opening day on September 12th 1915 with over 775 members present from 47 different townships who voted unanimously in support of the project despite fears that open enrollment would lead too easily to monopolies & social unrest similar phenomena taking place concurrently throughout much northeastern NJ during this same period (& continuing even today among some recent college graduates en route home from various jobs). Union City is a small town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,933 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Union City were Frenchmen and Indians in 1764. The British burned down the Dutch post on the river bank in 1765 and founded a new post about 1 mile (1.6 km) upriver on what is now Burlington Street. The British built Fort Monmouth on land that was later taken by George Washington during the Revolutionary War as his headquarters at Trenton Landing. In 1777, General James Clinton founded Princeton University in what is now Princeton Junction near present-day East Brunswick Township; it was then known as West New Brunswick Township until 1821 when it became Union City township. In 1814, Congress established a military district under Major General Anthony Wayne which included parts of today’s Union City and Middlesex counties; this created job opportunities for locals who had contributed to America’s war effort or had been drafted into service. The town formed its own government with a mayor, recorder and two courts - one civil and one criminal - from 1815 to 1823 under direction of Colonel John Johnson (1784-1867). During this time, many local businesses were started including: Parsonage Brewery (1820), First National Bank (1824), Grocery store (1827), Barge waterwheel factory (1830), Edison Manufacturing Company plant (1835), Ford Motor Company plant (1910). During World War II, many factories were located around Trenton/Newark area such as RCA Radio Plant #2 which produced radios for American troops overseas; Ford Motor Company’s Willowbrook Plant which manufactured trucks and other vehicles; Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Seward Works which produced artillery shells etc.; while other companies producing food products such as Nabisco Companies' Purchasing Department Store etc., some closed after 1945 due to lack of demand or competition from supermarkets like Walmart etc.. After World War II ended there was an influx of GI's back intotown looking for jobs so Union City started growing again with updated housing developments being constructed throughout downtown along with more shopping options available thanks to Interstate 95 Corridor construction projects between 1951-1964 extending I-95 from Passaic County eastward through Newark & Middlesex Counties into Union County making transportation easier but also causing increased crime rates in central NJ because people living outside of cities didn't have access to safe areas/safe neighborhoods where they could go enjoy their lives without fear of crime or harassment etc... union city grew slowly again until the late 1990s whendemographics changed once again with younger generations moving away to larger towns & suburbs creating even more vacancies within downtown& surrounding neighborhoods forcing businessespeopleetc....to move out altogether leaving downtown empty & abandoned..... Another example of how demographics can change over time can be found in regards to race within the community... prior to gentrification taking place black residents constituted most of downtown@ 50% while since then whites comprise 60%+ majority although there are still Black families residing Downtown @ 30%. This has ramifications not just for social dynamics within the community but also business operations because black customers no longer feel comfortable going inside white establishments without being harassed or worse
