Union City, New Jersey is a city in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 54,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-Wilmington-Atlantic City Combined Statistical Area. Union City is located on the north bank of the Delaware River between Camden and Wilmington. The first permanent European settlement in what would become Union City was by Dutch colonists who founded a small town called "Middelburg" on the south side of the river in 1664. Middelburg was abandoned after only a few years due to Native American attacks and lack of food. The English established a small trading post at what is now known as Johnstown (now Pennsauken) in 1713; it became an important transportation hub for goods transported downriver from Philadelphia and Great Britain. In 1780, during the Revolutionary War, General George Washington's Continental Army invaded New Jersey and clashed with British forces at Monmouth Junction near Princeton; Union City emerged victorious and became one of war's key logistical hubs helping to support both sides. In 1812, when Atlantic County was created from portions of Middlesex and Hunterdon counties, Union City fell within its boundaries; but because it lay immediately east of Camden proper (and thus without any municipal services), it continued to be administered by Camden until 1824 when it became fully under Union City jurisdiction following annexation by that municipality from Cumberland County. During Reconstruction following America's Civil War (1861-1865), Union City experienced rapid growth as various white supremacist groups began using it as a base for operations; however, this development did not last long as most unionists soon turned against these activities once they realized their gains were short-lived given Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation). Union City is a city in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 13,890 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Union County after Paterson and the third most populous city in New Jersey after Newark and Camden. The first European to set eyes on what would become Union City was Nicholas-Jacques Conte who landed there on October 24, 1664 as part of Admiral Samuel Graves's expedition from Newport News, Virginia to explore and trade with the native nations of North America. Conte named the area "Conte's Point" in honor of his navigator friend and mentor. The first settler in what would become Union City was John Jameson who arrived there in 1728. He built a small house on land he had purchased from the Native Americans near what is now Market Street. In 1730 Jameson married Maria Philips (Maria de la Paz) and they started farming the land which they renamed "Jameson's Mills". They also erected a windmill which still stands today on that site. On July 1, 1738 David Williamson bought 2 acres of land east of Jameson's Mills from Maria Phillips for $4 per acre fastball style! This property became known as Williamson’s Hill because it overlooked Market Street where David lived until his death in 1811 at age 86 years old! In 1800 John Dickinson moved to this area from Cushing Township, New York and began buying lots adjacent to Williamson’s Hill for $1 per lot! By 1810 Dickinson had acquired over 100 acres within present-day Union City limits - making him one of its earliest residents! John Dickinson made significant contributions to both politics and culture during his lifetime - serving as an delegate to both the Continental Congress (1774-77) & Pennsylvania General Assembly (1787-89). As a result of his activism & public service, many people refer to him as "the Father Of The Nation." Williamson Avenue runs parallel to Main Street through downtown Union City today – honoring one of its original early settlers!
