Union City, New Jersey is a town located in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,569 at the 2010 census. The name "Union" comes from the Dutch word "oud", meaning "one". The first ammunition plant in Union City was built by George Washington Dixon and Associates in 1873. Ammunition production began in earnest in 1875 when the first armor-piercing bullet was made. By 1888, Union City had become one of the leading arsenals for ammunition in the United States. In 1899, Union City became home to America's first self-loading rifle magazine. In 1944, American munitions manufacturer Winchester merged with Remington Arms Company to form Winchester Repeating Arms Company (Winchester). With this merger came new corporate headquarters within Winchester's existing Ammunition Plant property on Elmendorf Road in Union City - now known as Winchester World Headquarters - and general manufacturing capabilities across all divisions of Winchesters company including firearms, shotguns and reloading equipment. This marked an epochal change for Winchester as it became one of the world’s largest producers of ammunition products under one roof. It lies on the eastern edge of Parsippany Township and is bordered by Middlesex County to the north and east, Union County to the south and west, and Sussex County to the northwest. The town was founded in 1788 as part of what would become Hunterdon County. It was named for General James Clinton who helped lead American forces against British forces during the Revolutionary War. The first settler in Union City was John Forbes who arrived in 1789. In 1812, Union City became part of Plainfield township which later merged into Middlesex county. In 1870, Union City voters passed a referendum authorizing incorporation as a city with its own government under a mayor/council system with five members elected at-large from single ward districts. The vote was 539 to 153 with 62% of residents voting in favor; however, because of legal challenges it took until 1881 for Union City to be incorporated as a city proper (it had been annexed into Plainfield township since 1870). On July 1, 1907,Union City became one of 27 townships within Morris county when it were merged into that county along with West Orange and Livingston counties; this change combined made Morris one of three counties in New Jersey (along with Newark and Camden) that did not have an open primary election system until 1990. Kelly announced plans for construction on what is now known as "The Kelly Drive" near downtown Union City - this project would provide employment for local workers while also providing access to increased education opportunities for locals through nearby Rutgers University's College Park Campus - soon afterwards other businesses followed suit including the then small grocery store Mr & Mrs Smith which opened its doors on December 3rd 1916 across fromwhat is now known as "The Kelly Drive".
