Union City, NJ is a city in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 33,561 at the 2010 Census. The city was founded on October 25th, 1825 by commissioners from Newark and Elizabethtown. It grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its position on the border of two major American railroads - the Pennsylvania Railroad and the Atlantic Railway. However, during World War I Union City was almost destroyed by a fire that burned for three days in 1911. The city's economy has been based largely on manufacturing since the early 20th century.
