Union City, New Jersey is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey on the southern tip of retrie Island. The population was 9,564 at the 2010 Census. It is part of the Camden-Atlantic Junction, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Union City were Swedish immigrants who arrived in 1814. They built a farm and wharf on what is now Park Avenue. In 1825, they founded the village of Union City which included their farmstead and all of what is now Union City Township. The first school was opened in 1828 and it became an academy in 1835. In 1840, the first church was dedicated and it remains one of today’s most popular destinations for tourists due to its unique architecture and preserved history. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln was born in nearby Rahway and he attended private schools there before moving to Union City to live with his father after he had been elected President of the United States. He returned to Rahway later that year but decided to remain living in Union City until his inauguration as President on March 4th 1865 – making him only the second U S president ever to reside continuously inside one city block (the others being Andrew Johnson). After his inauguration, he continued living at 5 Broad Street where he died two years later from a stroke caused by aging age-related complications from office work combined with poor health conditions brought about by syphilis contracted during his time as Vice President under Franklin D Roosevelt
The city of Union City, New Jersey was founded in 1795. The city was named for the union of the two towns of Liberty and Eckford. The first settler in Union City was Nicholas Goodrich, who arrived in 1795. GOODRICH & CO., merchants, founded a store in what is now the heart of the city on Market Street. In 1812, John D’Angelo built a tannery and married Anna Maria de Cesare as part of his attempt to gain entrance into Passaic County. In 1814, John D’Angelo and others organized a town meeting in Union City to consider incorporation into Passaic County. They voted to become a town and received incorporation from Passaic County on October 4th, 1814. Union City experienced some prosperity during its early years but soon fell victim to gold fever which led to heavy investment by speculators and quick depreciation of local currency against sterling values. This caused great financial distress for the townspeople who were forced to sell their homes and businesses during the boom period but also contributed significantly to civic pride in Union City throughout its history
