Trenton, New Jersey is a city in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 31,827 at the 2010 census. Trenton was founded in 1789 and incorporated as a city on April 14, 1871. Trenton is one of five cities in the state that are considered part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Trenton were Native American hunters and gatherers who lived along the rivers and streams that flow through the community today. It is said that their village was located near what is now downtown Trenton on land donated by Governor George Mercer to the town in 1789. The first settler to arrive in what would become Trenton was Moses Greenough who arrived with his family from Englewood Township, NJ on December 19th, 1790. Greenough had been appointed surveyor general for Mercer County and traveled throughout northeastern Pennsylvania looking for a site to settle. He arrived at what would become Trenton on February 2nd, 1791 and built his house at Meetinghouse Lane/High Street. In 1793 Captain John Stevens came to live in what became known as Stevens Point (now called East Side), about northeast of where present day Market Street meets Third Avenue nearpresent-day State College Boulevard). At this time there were only two houses within mile of each other - one belonging to Capt Stevens and another belonging to Robert Morris who organized the original Rutgers University campus north of Princeton Bridge . In 1814 Nicholasolas Condon established himself east of where Hunterdon Avenue meets Third Avenue - he named his home "Condon's Hill" after Nicholas Condon's father-in-law Lt Colonel James Prentice (1763-1836) – though it does not appear that he ever set foot inside present day Trenton proper! It wasn't until 1830 when John Forster settled down beside Richards Creek just west of present day Exchange Street/Route 9 which later became Northumberland Avenue between Fifth and Sixth Streets before finally setting up shop across from modern day Capitol Square! Later immigrants such as Lorenzo Parmesan , Pietro Carpentieri (from Italy ) Anthony Colonna (a Huguenot) also settled here during this time period with many building homes they termed 'cottages' because they did not own land or have any need for an indoor place to stay wintertime! Many Italians also worked odd jobs or served apprenticeships under Englishmen during this time period so some may have even held title to real estate holdings liketoday’s buildings lining South First Street near Market Street! In 1837 Newark native Daniel Webster purchased 1 acre lot situated east side of then current Second Avenue south between Fourth & Fifth Streets from Peter Sellers for $2 per acre – making Webster one of the very first people to own property within easy reach of downtown Newark ! Webster quickly realized that he needed more space so he proceeded To build what would eventually become today’s Verizon Center next door on South Broad street fronting Third Avenue !! In 1850 businessman Isaac Nourse bought 300 acres northwest side of current Fourth avenue between Fifth & Sixth Streets from Amos Eaton – giving him access to both water supplies necessary for farming while still remaining close enoughtotown sohe could visit often !! By 1860 Nourse had developed into oneofthe largest landowners in Northeast Jersey history having acquired over 5 square miles including partsofwhat are now Camden & Vineland townships !! Lastly we come back around….. In 1873 Andrew Harnet sold 7 lots adjoining High School Grounds east side corner High School Road/ Route 9Ft Wayne Rd.,northwest corner Eighth St./Newark Ave.,southwest corner Tenth St./Harmont Ave.,and southwest corner Twelfth St.(now West Union Square)for $7 per lot!! This allowed farmers and others living farther away from town allenangable accesso
