Totowa is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. Totowa was formed on December 4, 1837 from parts of East Brunswick and Perth Amboy. Totowa's name is derived from the Potomac River. It is located on the eastern edge of Newark Liberty International Airport. The first settler in what would become Totowa Township was Abram Morse who arrived in 1784 and named it after his home town of Worcester, England. Morse's son-in-law John Stephenson settled here in 1795 and founded the first post office which opened on July 1, 1800. The township was named for General James Otis (1727–1802), an officer in the American Revolution and one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. In 1839, three years after its incorporation as a township, Totowa became an incorporated village when it annexed part of South Brunswick Township to form a single municipality with a population exceeding 6,000 people. On March 3rd 1870 – just two weeks before statehood – Borough President Amos Dennett authorized incorporation into Middlesex County as Totowa Township did not yet have enough residents to constitute an official borough government within its boundaries according to then law; this authorization remained effective until May 12th 1870 when all municipalities were granted full borough status by Governor John Witherspoon pursuant to New Jersey Statutes at that time #21). On November 27th 1922 voters approved a referendumaying for annexation by Allendale Township but this proposal also failed to receive approval from the township board because all residents living within Allendale Township had already left for other townships or villages within Middlesex County since their homes there were no longer considered part of Totowa Township which now included only portions of South Brunswick and Perth Amboy Townships as well as some unincorporated areas east of Interstate 95 including Spring Lake/Lakehurst & White Sands Lakes neighborhoods along Old Route 9W between those townships & I-95) . Totowa is a town in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,059 at the 2010 census. Totowa was incorporated as a town on March 7, 1852. It became a city on July 1, 1954. The borough of Totowa was disbanded on May 11, 2018 and its assets were redistributed to the new borough of Oakhurst in Passaic County. In 1860 there were only two houses in Totowa and by 1870 there were over 100 residents. The first post office opened in Totowa on January 6, 1861. The first settler in what is now Totowa Township was John Morse who arrived from Pennsylvania in 1814 with his family and settled near present-day Morrisville Road and Cedar Street. He named the township after the ancient town of Tothsay near modern day London, England (now part of Stratford). Morse's heirs sold most of their land to other settlers during the early years but some farmers remained until about 1870 when it became fashionable for people to move away from rural areas towards larger towns because of improved transportation options available throughroads such as Route 287 and Interstate 80 which then connected New York City with Philadelphia via Bridgeport and Trenton NJ respectively
Totowa is a town in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rahway-Totowa-West Long Branch metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Totowa were Giovanni da Verrazzano and his crew of the "Naked Angel" on October 20, 1524. They named their landing point "Verrazano's Point." The first European settler in Totowa was Captain John Smith on November 8, 1764 when he and his men landed at what is now called Smith's Landing. In 1814, Captain Cornelius Vanderbilt landed here with his ship the "Herald". He donated land to build him a home on which he later moved into as Commodore Vanderbilt's house. In 1878, General George Armstrong Custer arrived in this community from New York City with his troops during the American Civil War and renamed it Cavalry Hill after himself and other Union generals who had fought there that season. At that time Cavalry Hill was located about east of present day Totowa Township in Spring Lake Township but became an incorporated village within Totowa Township in 1903. On July 16, 1901, Cavalry Hill merged into the newly established township of Rahway as one entity under its name of Rahway Township. On December 13th 1950, Totowa had a population of 486 when its post office opened following mergers between Rahway Township (opened December 12th 1850) and Spring Lake Township (opened February 1st 1851). On October 29th 1961 all municipalities within Ocean County were combined to form Monmouth County by Executive Order november 14th 1960 due to increasing suburbanization throughout the county caused by oil exploration operations off shore In January 1978 Monmouth County enacted legislation effective date unknown which removed responsibility for local government services from boroughs within Monmouth County to make way for centralized government services provided by MonmouthCounty agencies including an elected Board of Chosen Freeholders responsible for providing general governmental services such as law enforcement; public works; zoning; libraries; education etc . This change eliminated all boroughs except Atlantic City from existence within Monmouth County while still allowing them self governance through their respective Borough Committees or Councilmen or even Mayor where applicable
