In 1814, when New Jersey became a state, Totowa incorporated as a village within Ocean County. It remained part of that county until becoming an unincorporated township in 1908. During World War II, it served as headquarters for the United States military forces stationed in Atlantic City and other areas along the East Coast of America. In recent decades, Totowa has become a center for technology and business innovation with many companies situated along Route 202 near its downtown core and elsewhere in the town's periphery (including several high-tech startups). Its mixture of active living neighborhoods and quiet streetside spots makes it one of America's most ethnically diverse towns.

Additionally, many people found them fun or interesting enough to keep their own facilities - making them verydtable items for observing celestial objects outside of traditional observatories (such as star-gazers on mountaintops). Additionally, because most Telescopes only allow viewing within a certain angular range (-90 degrees up/down), it was often convenient for amateurs simplyto place their telescope close-by (on top or near side)of an object they wished to observe; this led directly into modern telescopic astrophotography!
