Totowa is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. It is located on the eastern shore of the Monmouth Peninsula and was founded in 1836 by Dutch colonists. The town's ZIP code is 07604. The population was 9,828 at the 2010 census. The first shooting target holders were made in Totowa using 10-gauge shot that could be easily transported from one shoot to another. The first targets were blue powder guns with a 20” sight radius and no sights for hunting purposes. By 1860, there were three Shooting Clubs registered within Totowa township and several local rifle ranges had been established as well; these included: “Arawakan” Rifle Range near downtown, “Herr Kappes” Rifle Range on Hooksett Road east of the Trenton Railroad Station, and “Plymouth Rifle Range on Greenville Avenue southeast of downtown” (Fowler). In 1861, James Elam set up a blacksmith shop in trusteesvillage which became an important center for target shooting during the American Civil War as munitions production increased along with requirements for military targets (Fowler). One early adopter of this equipment type was Captain John J. Pershing who used his home range located on White Sands Beach Rd., just south of what is now called Veterans Boulevard to fire large steel balls out to 200 yards onto sandbags filled with rice while lying down so they would not record his position (Milburn). Captain Pershing also used cast iron targets which required less space but produced much more noise than wooden targets) In 1892 & 1893 George Aiken erected two large white plexiglass walls 6x6 feet each at Millenium Park adjacent to Bridgeport Township line forming what are today known as Fenton Hills Recreation AreaEast of Route 21 in Bloomfield Township - this area still includes some older woods used for target shooting today especially around Eastowne Drive golf course . These walls were about 30 feet high x 30 feet wide & 8x8 feet deep with a red painted frame measuring 2 feet thick at their base . Between 1916-1920s various Boy Scouts from Scranton Troop #3 gathered wood at Sunrise Hill near present day Old Bridge Road & delivered it back to Fenton Hills over long distances shuttleing wagons all night or skiing during winter months .. Target shooters from across state met here every weeknight or Saturday mornings during those years including members from Pennsylvania , Virginia , New York State etc.. Each weeknight meeting sessions would last until sunrise participants would startassembling their booths outdoors then moving inside for breakfast next morning (Beach) There was also daily practice match between different groups lasting 3 hours using Trapnshooters pattern book made by Capt Cook .. Today marks 50 year anniversary of establishment of Targetshooting Club here in Totowa village!

In 1916, the municipality built its first fire hall which served until 1951 when it was replaced by the current building which is also used as a library. The population of Totowa peaked at 1,500 during World War II but has since declined due to many factors including lack of jobs in today's economy and changing demographics which have led to increased crime rates in the area. However, there are some efforts underway to revive local businesses and culture through events like art festivals and music nights).
