Totowa is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,044 at the 2000 census. The name means "town of Tottering settlers." It was incorporated as a borough on November 3, 1868. The town's first settler was Johannes Muller, who arrived in what is now Totowa in 1793. The town became an agricultural center due to its location near the Monmouth Canal and its abundance of fresh water resources. A schoolhouse and post office were built in 1827, and a store opened in 1838. The first doctor in the area came to practice here in 1847. In 1865, Totowa annexed the neighboring towns of Brick Township and Rahway into the borough; this gave Totowa a total population of 10,711 people. In 1870-71, local mills closed because of low demand for products made from flour and other milling crops outside of New York City; however, some residents moved back into the community to start businesses again after World War I ended with an opening up of borders between countries that had been closed since then. The early 20th century saw growth for Totowa as an agricultural center due to improvements made by farmers using tractor technology which allowed them to sow more seeds per acre than before - leading to increased yields for both crops and livestock products enjoyed by residents throughout most of the decade. It is located just south of Trenton and east of Asbury Park. The first European to visit Totowa was Giovanni della Porta on October 10, 1614 when he stopped here with his army during their march from Trenton to Princeton. The Dutchman Pieter Barbier came to Totowa on September 8, 1677 while en route from Perth Amboy to Trenton with troops under Colonel James Moorehead. He built a cabin here and named it "Barbier's Landing." On February 25, 1702 John Doane landed at Barbier's Landing with 4 hundred men and set up a trading post there which became known as "Doane's Ferry." In 18th century local historian Daniel Coyle wrote: "At present we have but one house remaining in the town that was once full of people; it stands about two miles distant from the center of the town... In those days all around us were extensive gardens; now they are but few acres surrounded by houses." "Totowa," according to George Catlin (1834), "was one of many settlements founded by English colonists along what would become known as the “Mountain Road” or “Route des Pays-Bas” – an important trade artery connecting Philadelphia and Manhattan Island." Toted by this road were valuable minerals such as coal and iron ore that helped support early industrial growth in central New Jersey. After being bypassed by railroads in the 19th century, Totowa slowly regained some economic importance due its strategic location near two major highways – I-95E and I-280W – as well as its close proximity to other towns in Mercer County including Newton Township and Asbury Park. Despite these advantages, Totowa experienced significant decline beginning in the late 20th century culminating with a series of floods that destroyed most buildings between 1945 and 1951. In 1933, Totowa became one of fifty municipalities in New Jersey granted city status pursuant to a provision in the state Constitution which granted this type of classification to municipalities with a population over 7,000 inhabitants approved by a majority vote of the people living within their boundaries (the other fifty municipalities were Burlington (Newark), Elizabethtown (Middlesex County), Gloucester Heights (Gloucester County), Hillside Park (Union County), Paterson Junction (Paterson County), Rahway Falls (Rahway Borough)), as well as Glassboro City in Camden County although that city did not become subject to full municipal government until 1966. Totowa's main business districts are Hawthorne Avenue/Route 36 continuing south from downtown into Bloomfield; Union Place/Route 36 running east from Hawthorne along Broadway towards Canton; Peddlebush Road/Route 36 running north from Union Place along Peddlebush towards Brick Lane; and Water Mill Road which runs parallel with Route 136 but enters Totowah directly opposite Glassboro City limits just before reaching Wallkill Creek where it opens into Wallkill Creek borough limits
