Totowa was a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,554 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Monmouth River,14 miles (24 km) north of Ocean City and 20 miles (32 km) south of Newark. Totowa is known for its agricultural production and as the home of the Totowa Bears football team which played in three consecutive NCAA Division I-A playoffs from 1978 to 1980 before being disbanded due to financial troubles. Totowa was founded by Germans in 1764 as "Totowaty", meaning "the place where there are bears." In 1838, it became part of Union Township until 1881 when it became part of Mercer County.In 1955, Totowa had a post office with ZIP code 07740; however, this ceased operations on July 15, 1957 because the township merged into Rahway Township. On December 7, 2006, Rahway Township discontinued its own ZIP code and combined with Totowa to form a new township called Rahway Townships within Mercer County. The first settler in what would become Totowa was David Friedlander who arrived in 1764 fromGermany with his family. He built a log cabin on what is now residence number 522 along Monmouth River Drive; it still stands today and is used as a museum by local history buffs and genealogists who visit during regular business hours.. In 1838 another German settler named Johannes Sauer took up residence at house No 6 on present day Route 22; he also built a cabin that still stands today but is currently used as an inn by nearby Bordentown Beach Resort & Casino.. The Friedlanders were followed soon after by Jacob Hirschman who platted what would become Lot 524 on October 10th of that year.. The village name originated from an observation made by John Stevens about some cows grazing near Fort Lee: "the more than two hundred cows which lie upon this spot show us that some man has been here since before our time" This led Stevens to christen his new community "Totowaty". On November 3rd of 1838 Abraham Ortlieb purchased lot 474 for $100 from Isaac Scheringhaus who had bought it from Godfrey Weems four years earlier.. Ortlieb erected his home thereon later renamed "Ortliebs' House". Thereafter many residents added their homes onto Ortliebs land including Gottfried Fischbach whose house can still be seen just west of Ortsiebs property line at street number 8053 .. Many other families also contributed over time including Martin Kappenhofer's farmstead located between houses Nos 5 & 6 off Route 22 which can still be seen today across the street from current day dealership building #811 .. When total acreage reached 2141 acres or 50% thereof (), James Prentice leased Lots 422-426 totaling .27 acres to Jeremiah McNally for single use only!. After McNally's death in 1840 Prentice sold all remaining landexcluding .27 acresof lot 426 back to McNally plus interest thereby forming McClennan's reservoir area now known as Diamond Brook Park .. Finally Jacob Kappenhofer donated additional .50 acressurrounding his home at intersectionofcurrentdayRoute 22andMountainsRoad naming him trustee for life vesting such gift dbk# 9057 etc... thus giving risetopresentDayKappenhoferVillage name (). The following year on April 14th James Prentice donated another parcelcontaining .27acresofLot 426 aforementionedto George Backus for general use only towards erectionof schoolhouse or any other public purpose not connectedwith agriculture or stockraising purposes only accompaning passage through said tractoMercer county freeholdership either then existing or hereafter created thenceforward subject always thereto). This second donation marked one-half mile (1 km) northeast cornerofLot 476 opposite residencesofJacob KappenhoferandGeorge Backus now occupiedby latter latter's son CarlBackus& grandsons Andrew & Mitchell etc... finally giving rise tototalarea around present day Village Hall complex comprising upwards OF 120acresthroughoutcombinationwith surrounding rural areas viz.: DiamondBrook Park (.30), East View (.25), Mountains Road (.20),Lakefront (.10), West View (.05)) Today’s Village Hall complex -Conceivedearly1955—was originally designed solelyfor recreational purposes comprising Playground(later enlargedTo includeFootball Field/Soccer field), Ballroom(later enlargedTo include Dance floor/Bandstand), Library/Gymnasium(later enlargedTo include Health Center)), several classrooms& multipurpose hallwaysplus six dwellings,. Totowa was established by Dutch colonists in 1664 as a small cabin community on the banks of the Hackensack River. The town grew rapidly and by 1701, it had a population of over 100 people. In 1814, Totowa became part of the United States and was incorporated as a borough. In 1928, Totowa merged with neighboring West New York to form the new municipality of Totowa-West New York.
