Totowa is a town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,009 at the 2010 census. Totowa was incorporated as a borough on March 14, 1856, from portions of East Brunswick and Middletown. The borough became a city on July 1, 1962. Totowa is located in the Philadelphia–New York metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Totowa were Dutch colonists who landed there in 1629 and named it "Willemstadt". In 1714 Englishman Captain John Smith surveyed the region and named it "Totowia" after home country Province of Holland. In 1733 James Kieft established a trading post in what is now Totowa Township with cargo bringing goods overland from New Netherland via Delaware Bay. In 1801 Nicholas Biddle donated land to make way for the community that would be called Totowa Township (then part of East Brunswick). On March 14, 1856, Borough President Ezra Latham certified that Ratcliffe's Addition to the township should be known as "Totowia". On April 10 of that year the first public meeting took place at which officers were chosen including Clerk-Treasurer Sidney Fenton and Alderman George Waddell. In 1862 when Trenton became an independent city, Totowa voted to become its own city under Mayor Averill Harriman with boundaries set east of Hackensack Avenue along Front Street and south of Broad Street (now parts of Camden Yards). On July 1, 1962 Cotterville annexed Totowa into Trenton as one municipality. The original name for this town was "East Brunswick", but this name was changed because residents there objected to being called "East Brunswick while their town stood opposed to secession." According to the United States Census Bureau, Totowa had a total area of , all land.
