Totowa, New Jersey is a small town in Mercer County, New Jersey. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark/Trenton-Hudson Metropolitan Statistical Area. Totowa was founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 and incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1847. The name "Totowa" comes from the Lenape word "toto", meaning "to be quiet." The borough's original site was on an island in Hackensack River. In 1794, the new county seat of Mercer County was moved to Totowa from Rahway and its islands were annexed into Totowa Borough. In 1827, Rahway Township became part of what would become Mercer County and the borough became part of that township. The county seat again changed hands several times until it was transferred to Trenton in 1908 when Essex County was created. In 1934, Totowa separated from Trenton to become its own municipality with a two-seat board of commissioners. On January 1, 1935, Totowa amalgamated with Lawrence Township to form Lawrence Borough (the merger being effective March 15). On October 1, 1954, TotowaagainseparatedfromLawrenceBoroughtoformItsownmunicipalitywitha4-seatboardofcommissionerseffectiveOctober1st54;thismergerwaseffectivejustintimeforNewJersey statehood celebrations that year. On May 5th 1959 residents voted by referendum to incorporate as a non-partisan township with a mayor and five trustees instead of just three officers elected at large like now. This change took place due to concerns about partisan control over municipal affairs within the community which had been demonstrated through various local elections won by Democrats since Reconstruction days when Republicans controlled all branches of government save for education and police services while white majorities ruled most businesses and professions save for land ownership where single men held almost complete control over all aspects of life while women received only minimal rights including voting rights despite making up close to 50% of total population according to 1920 Census data indicating nearly 60% female participation in workforce). By 1924, Only a few remaining buildings were left standing: the school house (now a museum), court house (now used as storage), andone home on Main Street that still stands today (it is now used as rental property). As part of efforts to reduce development around the community since its heyday, the last family to live there withdrew from ownership after Cancer struck their daughter two years ago; however they have not vacated any of their original homes yet so they are considered living ghosts still dotting Totowa's landscape today!
