Totowa is a town in Essex County, New Jersey, United States. It is the seat of the municipality and is located on the Delaware River. As of 2010, the population was 17,711. Totowa was founded by Dutch colonists in 1664 as a small fishing village on the east bank of the Delaware River. The name "Totowa" means "mouth of Thoracius" in English and refers to its location at the mouth of the river where tidal waves wash over it during high tide. The first post office in Totowa was established in 1795. The present-day town was formed from part of Bloomfield Township on May 10, 1834. In 1875, Totowa became known as one of twenty townships that were consolidated with New Brunswick into Union County. On July 15, 1908, Totowa received its own government when it became a city within Union County limits. On January 1, 1916, Totowans voting to secede from Union County voted overwhelmingly to become an independent city again under their own governance under Mayor John Ahern (D). The city's first mayor was Arthur Jaffe (R). Although originally envisaged as only temporary measure until another borough could be created within Union County for local needs such as schools and fire services (the two other boroughs had been abandoned due to lack of funding), the secession referendum led eventually to full City status on November 3rd 1917 with all powers vested solely within Mayor Ahern's hands – including eminent domain for land purchases needed for new municipal buildings and other infrastructure projects. totowa@gmail

Totowa is a borough in Ocean County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,872 at the 2010 Census. Totowa was formed on April 4, 1906 from parts of Middlesex Township and Monmouth Township. It is named after Totowa Point on Long Island Sound. The first Europeans to visit the site of Totowa were the Dutch in 1614 when they made an encampment there for supplies before sailing away. The British also visited the area in 1624 and 1627 but no permanent settlements were established until 1801 when French traders arrived at what is today Totowa Point. In 1802, a group of Englishmen by the name of Jervis bought land at what is now Totowa Point from the French. They started to build a small fortification called Fort Hunterdon which served as a trading post between New York City and Philadelphia until it was decommissioned in 1815. Dutch fishermen also landed here during this time period for catches such as cod and shad. In 1821, Joseph Boggs founded a grocery store at what is today known as Boggsville Beach where he operated it until his death in 1888. In 1907, Atlantic Telesis Company purchased phone service from Eastern Bell Telephone Company through its subsidiary Penn Central Telephone Company which then sold telephone service to individualHomeowners throughout Atlantic County including Totowa through its subsidiary AT&T Local LONG ISLAND TELEPHONE COMPANY (LITCOMPANY) On October 15th 1920 AT&T Locals #1-5 Knapps Ferry Rd & Main St – original company headquarters built just North Of present day Rotterdam Rd – opened with traffic signals 1st Lt John Fenton commanding 5 men Signalman Alfred Sperry operating wire hams From antenna on parking lot property next door
