Totowa is a borough in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,844 at the 2010 census. Totowa was formed on February 3, 1864 from parts of Rahway and South Orange Township. The name "Totowa" is an anglicized form of "Trenton". The town of Trenton was founded by British colonists in 1778 as part of the Province of New Jersey. Trenton grew rapidly during the colonial period and soon became one of the most important cities in New Jersey. In 1784, Trenton was incorporated as a city under the name "New Trenton." By 1800, Trenton had acquired a large amount of land around its central business district which it named "Mountain View." In 1802, the city passed an act granting exclusive rights to build and operate a railroad between Newark and Philadelphia. The tracks were built and operations began in 1803. By 1830, Trenton had become one of America's largest rail centers with two stations serving both Newark and Philadelphia. During the early 19th century, Totowa's economy relied heavily on agriculture and fishing; however, these activities have declined since World War II when industry has taken over most economic sectors in Totowa Borough. In 1915-16 Totowa became home to America's first professional wrestling show whenough unknown promoters organized a match between Joe Lazzeri (a wrestler then known as Jack Napoli) and Kid Lewis headlined by Napoli's debut match for Brooklyn Strongs Wrestling promotion against Abe Attell at Central Park Theatre on October 25th; Lazzeri lost that night but gained national attention thanks to highlights package shown nationally that week on cable TV networks such as NBC affiliates WCBS (then CBS), WPVI (then WPBH), WTNH (now WNBC) & CW affiliate WBFF (then WWVB). That same year also saw the first professional wrestling video tape release when Paramount Pictures released their movie version of Davey Boy Smith vs Jessican McMahons WrestleMania IV which featured local wrestler Al Stroud taking on world champion Rocky Marciano at Cannery Row Theater; Stroud won that match via disqualification after Marciano hit him with his stool following their final bout at Madison Square Garden three nights earlier In 1952-53 Totowans successfully resisted efforts by Rutgers University to open its new campus located just east of town near where I-80 now exits Interstate 95; this led to what is now called "The Battle for Rutgers" which lasted several weeks prior to ultimately successful opposition by residents who gathered more than 100 signatures on petitions urging university trustees not to open their doors In 1958-59 TOWNSHIP BOARD OF TRUSTEES RESOLVED TO MAKE TOTOWA A CIVIL LIBERTIES DISTRICT AND PROVIDE FUNDING FOR THE ELECTION OF A BOARD OF EDUCATION WHEREIN EACH PERSON MAY VOTE FOR ONE SEATED MEMBERSHIP; THIS PROVISION WAS EFFECTIVE DATE JULY 1ST 1959 In 1961-62 township board enacted legislation providing for community resources center within boundaries agreed upon between township board & school board concerning use & care thereof; center opened November 2nd 1962 renamed 'Totowan Community Resource Center' subsequently closed due lack Of Funding circa 2006 .

Totowa was a small hamlet located in Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. In 1676, when General George Washington invaded New Jersey to try to stop the Dutch from establish settlements in what is now Pennsylvania, he camped at Worthing until relieved by Major-General John Sullivan on October 12. On that day, Washington ordered his troops to march eastward through Trenton and Princeton towards Monmouth Junction. They passed through Totowa on their way north and continued past it into New Brunswick before turning south again near Bridgeport. In 1775, during the American Revolution, Rotterdam Township (now Hillside) was formed from part of Somerset County with nearby East Milford Township joining in later that year. The township’s boundaries changed frequently because of the war – it included parts of both Hillside and Totowa between 1775 and 1800 – but its center remained squats around Rotterdam Creek until 1837 when it became part of North Brunswick Township. In 1824–25, local resident James Totten patented 350 acres (183 hectares) along present-day Route 322 near where Cottersville Road meets Ridge Road in what is now Totowa Borough; this land would become known as Totten Park after him. At that time there were no roads or houses within Totowa proper; residents traveled by boat or horseback to various villages situated within reach such as Southold or Easton until railroads arrived in the early 19th century. . . .

Founded in 1765 as a small village on the river waterfront, Totowa became an important port on the Delaware River. In 1834, the first railroad was built through Totowa and it grew into a major industrial center with shipbuilding, manufactories of textiles, and other industries. The city's population increased rapidly during the 19th century and reached its peak in 1910 with over 100,000 people. However, during World War I Totowa experienced significant destruction as a result of military activity and the city's strategic location near New York City made it difficult to support itself. After the war, Totowa slowly regained its former status as a commercial center but experienced another decline in population during the 1920s due to factors such as declining shipbuilding industry and Prohibitionism. Aspects of Totowa's history that have made it an interesting place include its rich Dutch culture which has been preserved in local institutions such as the Rotterdam High School; its wide diversity of religions represented in its community; and its close connection to New York City which has helped make it one of America's most heavily populated cities.
