This design was abandoned in the early 1900s because it required too much time and effort to keep track of each firearm's position in relation to its recoil spring assembly. A more advanced design, called a "gun turret," was first patented by Englishman George Stephenson in 1814. A turret consisted of two revolving turrets that could be tilted or moved independently from one another. The turrets could be locked into place by means of a system of hinged clamps. This design proved unsuccessful and was abandoned after only six months use. In 1825, French inventor André-Jacques Conte developed what is now known as the "Conte Gun Swivel."
