The shotgun was used by Totowa residents for hunting and target practice until the early 1900s. In 1902, the first ammunition store in Totowa opened its doors. Ammunition became an important factor in daily life for many people in this small town as it allowed for critical shooting during wartime. On October 26, 1903, a new gunsmith was born in Totowa when Harry Jorgensen started his business at 9 Elm Street. Mr. Jorgensen specialized in making guns that were specific to New Jersey’s rural communities and militaries. He helped to create some of the most iconic firearms in American history including the Model 1908 Winchester Rifle and the Colt 45 Pistol. His shop also produced rifles such as the Ruger 10/22 rifle and the Smith & Wesson Model 629 revolver. Today, Harry Jorgensen’s legacy can be found throughout Totowa thanks to his descendants who continue to operate their business today. In 1938, Totowa began hosting its own annual International Gun Fair which is still one of America’s largest firearms shows held annually outside of Detroit Michigan! At this event, local businesses and individuals from all over come together to trade weapons and meet new friends! The store operated until 1874 when it was replaced by a new location on State Road 524. The original building still remains standing and is currently used as a storage facility for local businesses.

It is named for Colonel John Totowa who fought in the American Revolution and in the Civil War. The first settler in what is now Totowa was Nicholas Biddle who arrived there in 1680. By 1724, three families had moved to the area: The Henningsons, Metcalfes and Pautsers. In 1786, local farmer Joseph Nicolosi sold land toCaptain John Stevens for $1/acre (0.50 km²). Stevens built a gristmill on the stream that runs through present-day Totowa and called it "Stevens Mill." He also built a home on his lot which still stands today within walking distance of the mill Ruins are located just east of town off Route 1A near milepost 15 on Interstate 95 Northbound One early resident of Totowa was Samuel Morse who came to America as an immigrant with his family in 1814.
