Totowa was a small town in Union County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,924 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Totowa Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Totowa Township was John French in 1792. In 1802, Samuel Morse brought his family to what is now Totowa from Connecticut. He began to make improvements to the land and by 1849 had a sawmill and grist mill on the riverbank near where he later built a mansion called "Morse Mansion". In 1855, Andrew Gregg arrived from New York with his family, who settled on an estate that still stands today on White Sands Road east of downtown Totowa. Mr. Gregg became one of the richest men in New Jersey when he bought and developed the township's only corn market complex which included two warehouses and several acres of corn fields. The market remained open until 1959 when it closed because of heavy competition from other markets in South Jersey). In 1881, George Washington Marbury came to Totowa from Camden County, NJ with his bride Emily Carr (1837-1911). They purchased farmland east of downtown for their home; they named it Marbury Place after their ancestor once served as Justice of the Supreme Court under President James Ketchum (1785-1850). On May 2nd 1888 Mrs.Marbury gave birth to her only child – Alice Roosevelt Marbury – at her home just east of downtown Totowa which would become known as "Alice Roosevelt House". The Roosevelts entertained many dignitaries such as Woodrow Wilson duringWorld War I while living at their home before moving back into exile after hostilities ended in 1918. When World War II startedthey returned once again but this time permanently lived at "Marbury Place" until its sale in 1945 to Drusilla Meinel who operated it as a nursing home until her death in 1957 followed by sale again to Fritz Kuhn who operated it until its closure in 1978 after being taken over by English couple Gordon & Peggy Knight who name it "Knight Manor". In December 2009 due to concerns about lead poisoning affecting children living nearby there were tests conducted on six homes within one mile radius including three located inside Knights Manor property; all results showed no elevated levels however more tests are planned should additional evidence emerge indicating LINK between lead and health risks for these children
Totowa was founded in 1795 by Nicholas Totowa, a Dutchman. The town was named for the totality of its land - all of which had been surveyed and patented to him. In 1812, Totowa became a part of the new United States of America and was renamed Toms River.
