Totowa is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,127 at the 2010 census. Totowa is a farming community with a small manufacturing sector. It is located on the border of Bergen County and Essex County. The first settler in Totowa was Nicholas "Nick" Scherrer who came to the area in 1798. He married Elseborga Hagerman and had four children: Nicholas, John (1812-1892), Anna (1815-1901) and Margrethe (baptized 1819). In 1827, John Scherrer bought land from his father-in-law richter for $2 per acre. This made Scherrer one of the wealthiest men in Ortoville Township. In 1830, he married Johanna Hagerty from Monmouth Township and they had six children: John A., Nicholas B., Anna C., Rebecca D., twins Emilie & Marie GK., Emma FK.). In 1865, Scherrer erected a home on what is now known as Elm Street which still stands today. His son Nicholas built an addition to the house in 1902 which remain today as the residence of the current mayor and school board members of Totowa Borough Council. A post office called Totowa was established at this location on October 12, 1867, but it did not open until November 6th of that year due to difficulties with getting mail through Princeton Junction downriver where New Brunswick lay at that time. The first postmaster was Elisha Leland who served until December 10th 1870 when Elijah Wicker took over responsibility for the entire township including Totowa. On July 3rd 1898 there was an accident when two wagons full of flour caught fire while being driven down Main Street from Northumberland Avenue into Totowa village limits; both cars were destroyed by fire! One wagon driver survived but many others were killed or injured! The resulting public outcry led to new laws being passed requiring all goods carried on vehicles carrying more than 8 pounds (3 kg) to be transported in sacks or boxes! At that time only carts and wagons could bring goods here so much damage had been done! On September 2nd 1898 another wagonfull of flour caught fire while being driven back up Main Street into town limits after stopping off at Mrs Scuderi's bakery; again both drivers survived but many others were killed or injured! That same day local farmers met at David Kragen's grocery store on Market Square to discuss ways to prevent these accidents; this meeting led to founding of Farming Association No 1 which later became Rotary International Union #6205

Totowa, New Jersey is a town in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 12,871 at the 2010 census. Totowa was founded on December 3, 1849 by Nicholas Morelli and his wife Anna Maria Morelli. It was named for their father-in-law Giovanni Battista Totolà. The Morellis had originally settled in plain view of Fort Lee but moved to Totowa in 1856 after purchasing land from the British Crown. At first the town consisted of just a few homes and a schoolhouse built by Nicholas Morelli himself; it grew rapidly with the arrival of settlers and later became an incorporated municipality with its own government and police force. By 1900 Totowa had reached its peak population with over 20 businesses and 100 residents; however, during World War II the town declined as many people left to fight or be drafted into war. However, due to wartime growth in both industry and population Totowa has since recovered somewhat and now features several historic buildings such as the old Post Office building (1930), which is still used as office space today, as well as numerous small businesses including Tilghman’s Department Store (1890) which still stands close to Route 981 between Downtown/The Hague Village and North Point/Downtown/The Hague Village. In addition to its rich history Totowans also enjoy some ofNJ's most popular attractions like Constitution Park(home of The Dutchmen's Museum) which offers a variety of exhibits about Holland's oldest settlement outside Rotterdamand Paramus Playground(a favorite spot for pedestrians), all while remaining affordable family orientated destinations that are perfect for easy care hair days or daytrips out during summertime when there is no public transportation available!
Totowa was founded on December 12, 1764 by George Washington and his wife Martha. It became a borough on May 1, 1847. Totowa Township was organized on April 15, 1856. The township was named after Totowa Creek which flows through it.
