Bullets were first used in warfare during the Revolutionary War. The British were using cannons with round shot, and these projectiles would not detonate until they hit a target. This resulted in many casualties because of this. Eventually, bullets were invented that exploded on impact, making them more effective. -1859 - Totowa was established as a town in Monmouth County on the peninsula bordered by the Delaware River to the north and east, Jersey City to the south and west, and Bridgeport to the northwest. -1887 - The New York Central Railroad donated land for a depot in Totowa. -1914 - The Connecticut Yankee Railroad donated land for a turntable in Totowa. -1945 - The New York Central Railroad donated locomotives and other rail equipment to be used at Pascagoula, Mississippi, during World War II. -1970 - The NJ Transit Railway gave rise to the current name of NJ Transit when it merged with Penn Central Railroad.
Totowa is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 2,797 at the 2010 census. Totowa is part of the Camden–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what is now Totowa was Andrew Barclay on November 8, 1772. He and his family were the first European settlers in what would become Totowa Township. In 1824, John Sibley bought land from Barclay and founded Sibley's Store which remain an important part of the community to this day. In 1870, when Hunterdon County was split into three parts along racial lines, Totowa became one of the areas included in Easton Township (later West Orange Township). On May 1, 1875, it became a separate municipality with its own government and name. On February 13th 1904 Robert Vail built Vail's grocery store on Main Street which still stands as one of the most important businesses in town today. It served as a major cultural and social center for many years within the community until it closed its doors in 2009 due to financial difficulties. -Families who live near or have ancestry from Totowa are known as "The Vails".

Totowa was founded by George Washington in 1764, and was the first town in New Jersey. The community—named for General Washington—was located on the banks of the Passaic River and became a center for trade and industry. Totowa grew rapidly during its early years, and by 1801 had reached its peak population of 1,500 residents. However, the Panic of 1837 led to a decline in Totowa's fortunes, and although it continued to function as a commercial center until after World War II, it has never regained its former prominence.
In 1814, Totowa was founded by Dutch Settlers. It became a township in 1834. Totowa was annexed to Union County in 1868 and to Passaic County in 1912. Totowa is the most populous municipality within Passaic County and the second most populous municipality within New Jersey after Newark.
