Totowa is located on the border of Camden and Trenton municipalities and it lies within the Camden Township. The first settler in Totowa was Andrew Snider who arrived in 1763 from England. In 1821 Canastota (later known as Grasmere) became a township in Harrison County and Totowa was incorporated as a borough on December 10, 1825 by order of the state government. The borough's Fentonville section became separate from Totowa on February 14, 1869 when that section was annexed to Camden. In 1903 Borough President Halsey recommended annexation of what were then Township 2 (now part of Camden) to form a new borough with an estimated population of 10,000 people. However this proposal met stiff opposition from both residents and member of the state government who felt that amalgamation would lead to more taxes being placed on their constituents than necessary and would not result in any real growth or progress for Totowans since they were already well-served by their own municipal governments. Ultimately it did not happen because no one wanted to leave their comfortable lifestyle behind and there were concerns about possible conflicts between the new municipality’s borders with those of neighboring municipalities should such annexation occur without proper planning or coordination among all concerned entities

This large project led to increased traffic congestion in the town and resulted in many job losses for local residents. Finally, in 1978, Totowans voted to merge with neighboring Middletown into Readington Township without any public input or notification. Today, Totoway remains an agricultural community with a strong German heritage that still depends heavily on its agriculture industry for economic stability. Alongside its thriving agriculture sector, the town has also grown rapidly into an bedroom community for New York City; home to over 60% of all residents who identify asGerman-American according to2010 Census figures - making it one of the most diverse towns in New Jersey .
