Tinton Falls is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden–Newark Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Tinton Falls" was given to the village by Colonel George Washington during his 1778 visit to Morristown and Trenton. At that time, the falls known as Raritan Creek were located just east of present-day Tinton Falls. The first European settlers in Tinton Falls arrived in 1814 when Captain Nathan Smith landed here with his group of white men from Rhode Island on the Defiance River. Captain Smith's group built a log cabin and named it Fort Smith after General Nathaniel Greene's headquarters at West Point on Long Island Sound. In 1822, Judge Elijah Brounspoon bought two tracts of land north of present-day Tinton Falls from John Woolridge for $200 per acre. He began development of what would become Tinton Falls Township and named it after himself – "Brunswick". In 1824, he donated land to the Methodist Episcopal Church which built its first church on what is now Main Street in TINTON FALLS – now called Bancroft Park Avenue – within one year of its founding. Reverend James Craine became pastor of First Presbyterian Church which had been founded in 1795 in Princeton by Reverend David Price as an English Reformed congregation under the leadership of Rev Dr John Woolridge and Rev Sir Isaac Brockman (the founder of Rutgers University). During the American Civil War (1861-1865), much fighting took place near and around Tinton Falls including Battles for Trenton Heights (1862), Cedar Hill (1863), Monmouth Heights (1864) and Mechanicsburg Heights (1865). On October 25th 1865 Union Major General Ulysses S Grant ordered all Confederate forces south of Newark ridges be destroyed except those defending Princeton Castle before crossing Delaware River into Pennsylvania to pursue Robert E Lee’s army retreating northeastward across Northampton County towards Gettysburg where they will meet disaster at Pickett’s Charge three days later on July 3rd 1863. Amongst those killed or wounded were Captain Nathan Smith whoblamed his wounds on friendly fire while engaged with Confederate troops nearby; Samuel Morse who drowned trying to cross Hackensack Creek; Myles McGuire who was shot through both lungs seconds after falling from a horseback onto a road below; William Harsha whose death was announced over celery seed sold by farmers along Route 9 about five miles from town center; Lieutenant Colonel Augustus Herrick commanding 1st Brigade 2nd Division Corps lost all but one foot below ankle when commandeered cannon captured by Confederates near Little Yorktown Bridge during Battle Of Gettysburg until finally being paroled at Valley Forge less than two weeks later following surrendering all forces west of Philadelphia including 24 regiments entire brigade including chief engineer officer Second Lieutenant Archibald Butt; George Armstrong Custer Private First Class US Infantry Killed After Being Captured By Indians Near Big Rocks Not far from town center while serving with 7th Cavalry Regiment US Cavalry During Indian Wars fought against Apaches
