Tinton Falls is a small town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,997 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Poughkeepsie-Newburgh-Middletown, New York metropolitan area. Tinton Falls is named after Rufus King Tinton and his family who settled in the area in 1781. Tinton Falls began as a small farming community with about 10 residents in 1824. In 1865, Colonel Augustus Fenton purchased 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land north of the village for $1 million dollars. The land was used to build the present day Tinton Falls High School and other public facilities such as the firehouse and post office buildings. The railroad arrived in Tinton Falls on October 25, 1875 and soon became an important factor in its growth; by 1880, it had served as both a transportation artery and commercial center for rural Hunterdon County. By 1923, when Amtrak attained full service within New Jersey,[1] Tinton Falls had become one of its most important stations along routes upstateNY.[2] During World War II many local businesses took part in producing munitions for the war effort including Ford Motor Company’s Arsenal Ordnance Plant which produced tons of TNT and other explosives for use during combat;[3] also located nearby were First National Bank (founded 1914), Jack Straw Tire & Rubber Company (1918),[4] White Sands Ammunition plant (1929)[5][6], General Electric Corporation’s Edison Works (1935)[7][8],[9][10][11] until it closed its doors permanently following Hiroshima bombing on August 6th 1945,[12] leaving behind an entire industrial estate consisting of over 150 companies employing approximately 5500 people.[13][14] Flanders Paper Merchants Inc., founded 1938 by Roy Bamberger closed operationally December 30th 2003 due to economic conditions; remaining assets were sold to Peet's Coffee Roasters Incorporated effective January 1st 2004[15]. Today remnants still exist of what once was this Eldred Industries complex - partial demolition can be seen throughout downtown today from street level to high rises near I-95 exit 11A

The town was founded by English colonists in 1764 and was named for Sir George Tinton, 2nd Baronet. In 1834, the name was changed to Tinton Falls Junction after the merger of two nearby towns, Tinton Falls and Springfield. The township was formed from parts of Hunterdon and Warren counties in 1908. The first settlers to arrive in what is now Tinton Falls were white men who came from England during the early 1800s looking for land to settle. They started out with a few families and gradually grew into a large community with over 100 residents by 1830. By 1834, when the township was formed, there were about 150 people living here. The first school in what is now Tinton Falls opened in 1764, serving grades Pre-Kindergarten through 8th grade at that time. A second school followed in 1835 and finally a high school (now known as Butler High School) opened its doors in 1909. At that time, only one percent of Hunterdon County’s students attended public schools; however, because of the rapid growth of the town and its importance as an agricultural center, TINTON FALLS HIGH SCHOOL WAS INTENDED TO FUNDAMENTALLY ACCEPT ALL HUNTERDON COUNTY STUDENTS IN ORDER TO SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY’S EDUCATIONAL NEEDS AND OTHER CULTURAL DEMands OF THE TIME! Today Butler High School continues to serve as one of Hunterdon County’s most important educational institutions as it provides access to high quality education for all students!

By 1806, Tinton Falls had become the leading center for trade in the region.
